Align Your Credentials With U.S. Academic Standards
Universities evaluate foreign degrees carefully for faculty roles. Have your international transcripts assessed by a NACES-accredited evaluator before applying, so Appalachian State's hiring committee can quickly confirm your qualifications meet the position's degree requirements.
Target Tenure-Track Postings for Stronger Sponsorship
Appalachian State is more likely to initiate H-1B or PERM sponsorship for tenure-track and full-time instructional roles than for adjunct or visiting positions. Focus your applications on permanent or multi-year faculty appointments where the university has greater incentive to sponsor.
Raise Sponsorship Early in the Interview Process
Faculty hiring committees at regional universities sometimes assume candidates are locally authorized. Mention your visa needs during the first substantive conversation so the department can loop in the university's Office of International Education before an offer is drafted.
Understand the PERM Timeline for Academic Roles
If you're pursuing a Green Card through EB-2 or EB-3, the DOL's PERM labor certification process can take a year or more. At a teaching institution like Appalachian State, the recruitment documentation phase often begins well before your contract renewal, so plan accordingly.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Open Teaching Roles
Filtering for Education employers with confirmed sponsorship history saves significant research time. Use Migrate Mate to browse verified Teaching openings at Appalachian State University and identify roles where international candidates have previously been sponsored.
Confirm Your OPT or CPT Covers Teaching Duties
If you're on F-1 status, verify with your DSO that your authorized employment category covers the specific instructional duties listed in the job description. Teaching assistantships and lecturer roles can carry different CPT or OPT authorization requirements depending on how Appalachian State classifies the position.

Find Teaching at Appalachian State University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Appalachian State University sponsor H-1B visas for Teaching roles?
Yes, Appalachian State University sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying Teaching positions, particularly full-time faculty and instructional roles that meet the specialty occupation standard. The university's Office of International Education typically manages the filing process in coordination with the hiring department. Adjunct and temporary roles are less commonly sponsored, so full-time or tenure-track appointments are your strongest path.
How do I apply for Teaching jobs at Appalachian State University?
Applications are submitted through Appalachian State's official faculty careers portal, where Teaching positions are listed by department. Each posting specifies required qualifications, and most faculty roles require a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching philosophy statement, and references. You can also browse verified open Teaching roles at Appalachian State with confirmed sponsorship history through Migrate Mate before applying directly.
Which visa types does Appalachian State University commonly use for Teaching positions?
Appalachian State University sponsors H-1B visas for full-time Teaching roles requiring a specialty occupation degree. The university also supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card pathways through PERM labor certification for longer-term faculty hires. F-1 OPT and CPT are available for eligible students in Teaching-adjacent roles, and TN status may apply to qualifying Canadian or Mexican nationals in eligible academic classifications.
What qualifications are expected for Teaching roles at Appalachian State University?
Most Teaching positions at Appalachian State require at minimum a master's degree in the relevant discipline, with a doctoral degree typically expected for tenure-track faculty roles. Teaching experience at the postsecondary level, a record of scholarly activity, and demonstrated subject expertise are standard requirements. Some departments also require evidence of effective pedagogy, such as student evaluations or a formal teaching portfolio.
How do I navigate the visa sponsorship process timeline for a Teaching role at Appalachian State University?
H-1B petitions are subject to USCIS's April 1 filing window and October 1 start date, so offers made in fall or winter align well with this cycle. If you're already on OPT, cap-gap provisions may bridge any gap. For Green Card sponsorship through PERM, expect the DOL process alone to take 12 to 18 months, making early coordination with the university's international office critical to protecting your status.
