Align Your Credentials to SACS Accreditation Standards
Appalachian State is regionally accredited by SACSCOC, which sets minimum degree requirements for instructional roles. Confirm your foreign transcripts are evaluated by a NACES-approved credential evaluator before applying, since hiring committees rely on these assessments to verify equivalency.
Target Faculty Lines Over Temporary Appointments
Tenure-track and full-time lecturer lines at Appalachian State are far more likely to trigger H-1B or PERM sponsorship than adjunct contracts. Adjunct roles are typically part-time and do not meet DOL prevailing wage thresholds required to support a petition.
Ask About the International Office Early
Appalachian State processes visa petitions through its Office of International Education and Development. Raise sponsorship in the offer negotiation stage, not after signing, so the office can assess your category and begin the Labor Condition Application filing with DOL before your start date.
Understand the H-1B Cap Exemption for Universities
As a public university, Appalachian State qualifies as a cap-exempt H-1B employer, meaning petitions can be filed at any point in the year without waiting for the annual lottery. You're not subject to the 65,000 cap or the April filing window.
Prepare for PERM If Seeking Permanent Residence
Education roles at universities can qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship, but PERM requires the university to conduct a formal recruitment process and document that no qualified U.S. worker applied. This can extend your timeline by 12 to 24 months beyond the initial H-1B approval.
Browse Open Education Roles Through Migrate Mate
Identifying which Appalachian State Education positions are actively hiring is the first step. Use Migrate Mate to filter open roles by visa type so you're targeting positions where sponsorship is already part of the hiring plan, not something you have to negotiate from scratch.

Find Education at Appalachian State University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Appalachian State University sponsor H-1B visas for Education roles?
Yes. Appalachian State University sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying Education positions, particularly full-time faculty and professional staff roles. As a public university, it is cap-exempt, so petitions can be filed year-round without going through the annual lottery. The university's Office of International Education and Development manages the filing process in coordination with hiring departments.
How do I apply for Education jobs at Appalachian State University?
Open positions are posted on Appalachian State's official HR portal. You can also browse Education roles that include visa sponsorship on Migrate Mate, which filters listings by sponsorship type so you can identify relevant openings before applying directly. Faculty roles typically require a cover letter, CV, teaching philosophy, and references submitted through the university's applicant tracking system.
Which visa types does Appalachian State University commonly use for Education positions?
H-1B is the most common nonimmigrant visa for Education roles requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specialty field. F-1 OPT and CPT are used for graduate assistants and student workers still completing degrees. TN visas are available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying Education occupations. For permanent residence, EB-2 and EB-3 are used for eligible faculty and professional staff.
What qualifications does Appalachian State University expect for Education roles?
Requirements vary by role type. Tenure-track faculty positions almost always require a terminal degree, typically a Ph.D. or equivalent, in the relevant discipline. Lecturer and instructor roles may accept a master's degree with professional experience. Academic advising and student services roles generally require a master's in counseling, education, or a related field. Foreign degrees must be evaluated by a NACES-approved credential evaluator.
How long does the sponsorship process take for an Education role at Appalachian State?
Once an offer is made, the Labor Condition Application is filed with DOL and typically certified within seven business days. USCIS then processes the H-1B petition, with standard processing taking two to four months and premium processing available for a faster decision. If the role moves toward permanent residence via PERM, expect an additional 12 to 24 months beyond the initial H-1B approval.
