About the Team
The Security Engineering team at ByteDance builds and operates the core systems that protect one of the world's largest internet platforms and its global user community. We tackle challenges that span threat detection and response (TDR), infrastructure protection, and the emerging frontier of AI and LLM system security — all at the scale of TikTok and ByteDance. Our engineers combine deep systems-building expertise with strong security fundamentals to deliver high-impact, production-grade solutions in a fast-paced, globally distributed environment. If you thrive on ownership, love solving ambiguous problems, and want your work to safeguard products used by billions, this is the team.
- Design and build innovative threat detection, prevention, and response (TDR) systems that protect large-scale platforms, critical infrastructure, and globally distributed endpoints.
- Drive the security of LLM-based systems and AI agent architectures — identifying novel attack surfaces, developing defensive frameworks, and ensuring the safe deployment of AI-powered products at scale.
- Own the end-to-end lifecycle of distributed security systems operating across global regions — from deployment and capacity planning through production reliability, observability, and continuous iteration at scale.
- Partner closely with cross-functional global teams to turn vague problem statements and emerging threat patterns into clear product requirements, and ship high-impact security capabilities on aggressive timelines.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or above in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related fields, with at least 3 years of hands-on software development experience.
- Strong fundamentals in algorithms and data structures; proficiency in Go, Java, or Rust, with the ability to write clean, reliable, and production-ready code.
- Strong back-end development skills, including experience with cloud-native infrastructure, networking, and building services that run reliably at scale.
- Hands-on experience using AI-assisted and agentic development workflows to accelerate engineering velocity and quality, paired with a strong personal standard for building software quickly and well.
- Proven ability to think critically, break down complex or ambiguous problems, and formulate clear, practical solutions in a timely manner.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing and implementing threat detection and response (TDR) systems, including detection engineering, automated response pipelines, and integration with modern security architectures.
- Familiarity with security challenges in LLM-based systems or AI agent architectures — such as prompt injection, model abuse, tool-use exploitation, or securing agentic workflows.
- Hands-on experience with cloud-native infrastructure (e.g., Kubernetes, observability stacks), large-scale streaming/batch data pipelines, and building distributed systems that power real-time detection and prevention at scale.
- Experience working in globally distributed teams and driving cross-functional projects end-to-end, from ambiguous problem definition through rollout and iteration.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical initiatives, mentor engineers, and influence security direction beyond your immediate team.

Align your cloud certifications to ByteDance's stack
ByteDance's infrastructure runs heavily on internal platforms built on top of public cloud primitives. AWS, GCP, and Kubernetes certifications signal direct relevance. Tailor your resume to reflect distributed systems and large-scale workload experience, not just general cloud administration.
Confirm specialty occupation framing before applying
USCIS requires Cloud Engineer roles to qualify as specialty occupations under H-1B. Roles that blend generalist IT support with cloud tasks are harder to sponsor. Prioritize job postings that specify degree requirements in computer science, engineering, or a directly related technical field.
Use Migrate Mate to surface active Cloud Engineer openings
ByteDance posts Cloud Engineer roles across multiple teams and locations, and not all listings make visa sponsorship explicit. Use Migrate Mate to filter for ByteDance roles that have an active sponsorship history, so you're applying where filings are most consistent.
Prepare for DOL prevailing wage scrutiny in your offer negotiation
ByteDance's LCA filings through DOL must meet prevailing wage levels for your specific role and worksite location. If you're relocating from outside a top-tier metro, the offered salary still needs to meet the wage level tied to the job's SOC code and location.
Understand the PERM timeline if a Green Card path matters
ByteDance sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards for engineering roles, but PERM labor certification can take 18 months or more before a petition is filed. Factor that lag into your H-1B status planning, especially if you're approaching the six-year cap on H-1B time.

Find Cloud Engineer at ByteDance JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does ByteDance sponsor H-1B visas for Cloud Engineers?
Yes, ByteDance sponsors H-1B visas for Cloud Engineer roles. The company files petitions through the standard H-1B cap process, with selections dependent on the annual lottery held each March. ByteDance also sponsors H-1B1 and E-3 visas, which are cap-exempt categories available to Singaporean and Australian nationals respectively, offering a more predictable path outside the lottery system.
Which visa types does ByteDance commonly use for Cloud Engineer roles?
ByteDance sponsors H-1B, H-1B1, E-3, and immigrant visa categories including EB-2 and EB-3 for Cloud Engineers. H-1B is the most common path for most nationalities. Australians and Singaporeans can pursue E-3 and H-1B1 respectively, both of which skip the H-1B lottery. Long-term employees may also be sponsored for a Green Card through the EB-2 or EB-3 employment-based categories.
What qualifications and experience does ByteDance expect for Cloud Engineer roles?
ByteDance typically expects a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, electrical engineering, or a closely related field, which also satisfies USCIS specialty occupation requirements for H-1B sponsorship. Hands-on experience with large-scale distributed systems, container orchestration platforms like Kubernetes, and at least one major cloud provider is standard. Roles on infrastructure or platform teams tend to weight systems design depth over generalist cloud operations.
How do I apply for Cloud Engineer jobs at ByteDance?
You can apply directly through ByteDance's careers portal or find visa-sponsorship-confirmed openings through Migrate Mate, which filters ByteDance Cloud Engineer roles by sponsorship history so you're not guessing which postings are realistic. Tailoring your resume to reflect ByteDance's infrastructure scale, including distributed systems, high-availability architecture, and internal tooling experience, strengthens your application before it reaches the technical screen.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Cloud Engineer at ByteDance?
For H-1B, the timeline starts with the March lottery, and if selected, employment can begin October 1. From offer acceptance to start date, that window can be six months or longer. E-3 and H-1B1 holders can move faster since there's no lottery, with consular processing typically taking two to eight weeks depending on the consulate and appointment availability. PERM-based Green Card sponsorship adds a separate multi-year process on top of any nonimmigrant visa timeline.
