INTRODUCTION
Category Labs (formerly known as Monad Labs) is a team of systems engineers and researchers on a mission to design and build at the frontier of decentralized technology. We strive to deliver significant improvements over existing blockchain solutions. After raising $225M in series A funding, led by Paradigm, we are growing our team. We’re the team behind Monad, a high-performance, EVM-compatible Layer 1 whose public mainnet is now live. We write the core software that runs it: a parallel-execution EVM, a custom state database, and a BFT consensus client, all developed in the open.
THE ROLE
We’re hiring a Senior Software Engineer to research, design, and build core improvements to the Monad protocol. Your work will involve distributed algorithms, cryptography, and consensus mechanisms. You’ll draw on previous experience in distributed systems or blockchain engineering, and work as a vital member of a small, high-performing team.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Design and implement core improvements to the consensus mechanism, gossip protocol, state synchronization algorithm, leader election protocol, etc.
- Devise experiments to test worst-case scenarios, and iterate on your design based on the results.
- Design components while taking into account the behavior of other blockchain systems such as rollups, bridges, or staking systems.
- Build performant system components from scratch in C++ or Rust.
WHO YOU ARE
- You have at least 5 years of software engineering experience in Rust, C++, or C.
- You have significant experience building performant systems from scratch, such as databases, device drivers, or embedded systems.
- You have excellent instincts for software architecture, memory management, and performance optimization and profiling tools.
- You hold a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Computer Science, or have equivalent experience.
- You value communication and collaboration.
WHY WORK WITH US
- Challenging problems: You’ll work on extremely challenging problems with massive impact. See our Blogs and Publications & Talks for a flavor of the problems we are solving in the real world.
- Huge opportunity: The Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) standard is ubiquitous, but existing EVM-compatible chains are very slow. Monad’s core innovations offer developers the best of both worlds (portability and performance) and are a game-changer for mass user adoption in crypto.
- The right team: You’ll be part of a small, exceptional team (engineers and researchers make up 90% of the team).
- Open by default: Our core software is public on GitHub. You’ll build in the open, and your work ships where the whole ecosystem can see it.
- Culture: We’re a lean team working together to achieve very ambitious goals. We are united in our culture of collaboration, low ego, and high-quality output. As an early member of our team, you’ll help to shape our culture.
- Compensation: You’ll receive a competitive salary and equity package.
- Resources and growth: We’re well-capitalized, with backing from leading venture funds like Paradigm, Electric Capital, Greenoaks, Dragonfly, and Coinbase Ventures. We keep a lean team, and this is a rare opportunity to join. You’ll learn a lot and grow as our company scales.
HOW WE USE AI
We’re an AI-native team, and we expect engineers to use coding agents and keep up as the tooling evolves. A few things we believe:
- AI is leverage, not a crutch. Review what it generates with the same scrutiny you’d give a teammate’s PR, and own every line you ship.
- Judgment is what matters, not how long you typed by hand. We won’t ask for “N years of [tool].” The stack turns over every few months, so what matters is that you pick up new tools fast and know where and when they apply.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
The base salary range for this role is $180,000 – $250,000. This reflects the minimum and maximum range across US locations. It does not include benefits, token, or equity incentives. The final offer may vary based on factors such as relevant skills, experience, domain expertise, and work location. If you are based outside of the US, we have geographic considerations that may impact your final compensation.
Benefits for all Full-Time Employees:
- Private health insurance options
- Flexible paid time off
- Monthly wellness reimbursement
- Paid parental leave
Benefits for US employees:
- World-class benefits package with 100% paid medical, dental, and vision insurance including 75% coverage for dependents and HSA + FSA options
- 401(k) with company match
- Lunch and dinner stipend (in-office NYC)
Benefits for employees hired through an EOR (outside of the US) will be based on EOR offerings and country-specific requirements.

Lead with your OPT or TN status upfront
Category Labs has sponsored F-1 OPT, CPT, TN, and J-1 visa holders alongside H-1B petitions. If you're already authorized to work in the U.S. on one of these statuses, say so early, it lowers the barrier and signals a smoother transition for their HR team.
Target technical and engineering roles first
As a technology and software company, Category Labs concentrates its sponsorship activity in roles requiring specialized technical skills. Software engineering, data, and product positions are your strongest entry points, tailor your resume to emphasize domain-specific expertise, not just general tech experience.
Prepare for the H-1B specialty occupation standard
Category Labs sponsors H-1B visas, which require your role to qualify as a specialty occupation. Research which job titles they've historically filed for and frame your experience around the specific degree requirements and technical depth those roles demand during interviews.
Apply before H-1B lottery season closes
If you need H-1B sponsorship, timing matters. Category Labs must file petitions in the spring lottery window for October start dates. Identify and apply to open roles at least three to four months before the March registration deadline to allow time for internal approvals.
Highlight transition readiness from OPT to H-1B
Category Labs sponsors both OPT and H-1B, which suggests openness to supporting candidates through the OPT-to-H-1B pipeline. Frame your candidacy around continuity, show you can start on OPT immediately and transition cleanly, reducing uncertainty and legal complexity for the employer.
Find Category Labs roles through a verified sponsor database
Generic job boards don't tell you which companies actively sponsor visas. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history and find Category Labs openings alongside other tech companies with confirmed track records, saving you from applying blind.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Category Labs sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, Category Labs sponsors H-1B visas. The company has an established pattern of filing H-1B petitions for roles in technology and software, making it a viable target for international candidates who need employer-sponsored work authorization. If you're on OPT or another work-authorized status, getting hired before the lottery window gives you the strongest path to H-1B sponsorship.
Which visa types does Category Labs sponsor?
Category Labs sponsors a range of visa types including H-1B, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, TN visa, and J-1 visa. This breadth is a meaningful signal, it suggests the company is comfortable working with candidates at different stages of their immigration journey, not just those who already hold H-1B status.
Which roles or departments at Category Labs are most likely to receive visa sponsorship?
Given its position as a technology and software company, Category Labs is most likely to sponsor roles in software engineering, product development, data, and other technical disciplines where specialized degree requirements align with the H-1B specialty occupation standard. Business and operations roles may see sponsorship less frequently, so candidates in core technical functions have the clearest path.
How do I time my application to Category Labs if I need H-1B sponsorship?
The H-1B lottery registration runs each March for an October 1 start date. To be included, your employer must register you during that window, which means you need to have an offer in hand before then. Aim to apply to Category Labs roles no later than January or February so there's time for interviews, offer negotiation, and internal legal review before the deadline.
How do I find open visa-sponsored roles at Category Labs?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find Category Labs openings that come with verified sponsorship history. Unlike general job boards, Migrate Mate filters specifically for employers with confirmed visa sponsorship track records, so you can browse Category Labs roles alongside other active sponsors in the technology and software space, without guessing which listings actually support international candidates.
