Align your stack with Chewy's backend systems
Chewy's backend roles cluster around high-throughput e-commerce infrastructure, including order processing, catalog management, and fulfillment APIs. Highlighting experience with distributed systems, Java or Kotlin, and event-driven architecture positions you for the roles most likely to move forward.
Target teams with active infrastructure scaling needs
Chewy's logistics and supply chain engineering teams have historically hired backend engineers to support rapid fulfillment expansion. Roles tied to warehouse management systems or real-time inventory are strong targets because headcount pressure in those areas drives sponsorship decisions.
Verify your OPT timeline before applying
If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm your remaining authorization window before submitting applications. Chewy needs enough runway to complete onboarding and file an H-1B petition before your OPT expires, so applications with six or more months remaining tend to progress further.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Backend Engineer roles at Chewy
Sponsorship-eligible backend roles at Chewy aren't always flagged clearly on general job boards. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Chewy backend positions that support visa sponsorship so you're targeting live openings rather than guessing at eligibility.
Clarify sponsorship scope during the offer stage
When an offer is extended, ask whether the role supports H-1B cap-subject petitions or only cap-exempt filings, and whether premium processing is available. Chewy's response tells you whether your timeline aligns with the H-1B lottery in April or a different pathway.
Prepare a degree equivalency statement early
DOL specialty occupation requirements mean your degree must demonstrably align with the backend engineering role. If your credential is from outside the U.S. or is a three-year degree, get a credential evaluation completed before the offer stage so it doesn't delay USCIS petition preparation.

Find Backend Engineer at Chewy JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Chewy sponsor H-1B visas for Backend Engineers?
Yes, Chewy sponsors H-1B visas for Backend Engineers. Backend engineering roles at Chewy typically qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS criteria because they require a degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related technical field. If you're applying as a cap-subject candidate, your petition would enter the annual H-1B lottery, so timing your application around the April filing window is essential.
Which visa types does Chewy commonly sponsor for Backend Engineers?
Chewy sponsors H-1B visas for ongoing work authorization and supports F-1 OPT and CPT for students in active degree programs or recent graduates. For engineers building toward permanent residence, Chewy also pursues EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through the PERM labor certification process. TN status is an option for Canadian and Mexican nationals whose backend engineering role meets the qualifying occupation criteria under USMCA.
How do I apply for Backend Engineer jobs at Chewy?
Browse current Backend Engineer openings on Migrate Mate, which filters for roles at Chewy that support visa sponsorship so you're only seeing positions relevant to your situation. When you apply, tailor your materials to Chewy's e-commerce and logistics engineering context. If you move to the interview stage, the recruiter will typically confirm sponsorship eligibility and discuss visa options before an offer is extended.
What qualifications does Chewy expect for Backend Engineer roles?
Chewy's backend engineering roles generally require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field. Practical experience with distributed systems, RESTful APIs, and high-availability architectures is consistently emphasized. Familiarity with the demands of retail-scale infrastructure, such as handling peak traffic during promotional events or coordinating real-time inventory updates, strengthens an application considerably.
How do I plan my timeline if I'm waiting on H-1B sponsorship from Chewy?
The H-1B lottery opens in March, with approved petitions taking effect October 1. If Chewy extends an offer in early spring, they can file your petition in April for an October start. If you're on OPT, a timely Cap Gap extension through USCIS lets you keep working between OPT expiration and October 1, provided your petition was filed before OPT ran out.
