Target faculty and research roles first
Christopher Newport University's sponsorship activity is concentrated in academic and research positions. Focus your search on faculty openings, postdoctoral roles, and specialized research appointments where H-1B and Green Card sponsorship is most commonly offered.
Understand the university's Green Card pathway
CNU has sponsored both EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visas, signaling a willingness to support long-term employment. If permanent residency is your goal, ask recruiters early whether a tenure-track offer includes PERM-based sponsorship as part of the compensation package.
Align your degree with specialty occupation requirements
H-1B eligibility at a university requires your role to qualify as a specialty occupation. Make sure your academic credentials directly match the discipline of the position, a degree in a tangentially related field can complicate the petition.
Reach out to the Office of Human Resources directly
University HR departments manage sponsorship decisions internally. Contacting CNU's HR office before applying can clarify whether a specific role is eligible for sponsorship, saving you time if the position falls outside their standard sponsorship criteria.
Time your application around academic hiring cycles
Higher education hiring follows predictable cycles, with most faculty searches opening in the fall for positions starting the following academic year. Applying early in the cycle gives CNU adequate time to initiate H-1B or PERM filings before start dates.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified sponsoring employers
When targeting universities like CNU, confirmed sponsorship history matters. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history and focus your efforts on institutions with a demonstrated track record of supporting international hires.

Yes, Christopher Newport University does sponsor H-1B visas. Sponsorship at CNU is most common for faculty and specialized academic roles that qualify as specialty occupations. If you're applying for a position in a specific academic discipline, confirm with HR during the hiring process whether that role is eligible for H-1B sponsorship.
What visa types does Christopher Newport University sponsor?
Christopher Newport University sponsors both nonimmigrant and immigrant visas, including H-1B for temporary specialty occupation workers and EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards for permanent residence. Which departments or roles at Christopher Newport University are most likely to receive visa sponsorship?
Visa sponsorship at CNU is most common in faculty, research, and highly specialized academic staff roles.
