As the parent company of BigCommerce, Feedonomics, and Makeswift, we connect the tools and systems that power growth, enabling businesses to unlock the full potential of their data, deliver seamless and personalized experiences across every channel, and adapt swiftly to an ever-changing market. We believe in harnessing AI responsibly to unlock new possibilities, and we’re looking for individuals who use it intentionally to solve problems, accelerate outcomes, and expand what’s possible in their role. Our purpose is to help businesses confidently solve complex commerce challenges so they can build smarter, adapt faster, and grow on their own terms. If you want to be part of a team of bold builders, sharp thinkers, and technical trailblazers who shape the future of commerce, this is the place for you.
We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our AI Operations organization and partner closely with the Data Solutions team to design, build, and scale the systems that power our AI-driven operations. In this role, you’ll help shape the next generation of AI-native products and automation frameworks—transforming ideas into intelligent, intuitive, and impactful tools that enable teams across the company to work smarter and faster.
You'll own the product lifecycle end-to-end—from stakeholder discovery and solution design through build, deployment, and ongoing monitoring. You'll implement novel AI technologies, rapidly prototype applications, and ensure seamless integration with our data infrastructure.
You’ll be part of a fast-moving, collaborative team that values experimentation, innovation, and craftsmanship. Working alongside analysts, engineers, and operations leaders, you’ll have the autonomy to prototype new concepts, own end-to-end product delivery, and play a key role in expanding how Commerce leverages AI to drive efficiency and business growth.
What You’ll Do:
- Develop secure, high-performance services that connect data systems, AI models, and business applications into a cohesive, scalable ecosystem.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to translate strategic goals into technical requirements, prototypes, and production-ready solutions.
- Own the product lifecycle end-to-end—including discovery, solution design, architecture, build, deployment, monitoring, and stakeholder management.
- Design, build, and maintain AI applications that enable automation, streamline workflows, and extend AI capabilities across internal teams.
- Rapidly prototype and iterate on new applications and features, experimenting with AI integrations and automation concepts to drive measurable business impact.
- Implement engineering best practices for performance optimization, maintainability, and data security across all deployed systems.
- Partner with a broader team of data engineers and analysts to ensure shared ownership of systems, clear priorities, and strong technical support.
Who You Are:
- Senior Engineer – 5+ years of professional experience as a backend engineer, with a proven track record of building and scaling production-grade applications. You architect systems end-to-end, from data flow to deployment.
- AI Curiosity – Demonstrated experience building AI-driven products incorporating agent orchestration, MCP servers, RAG patterns, structured outputs, evals, and the operational realities of running AI in production (latency, cost, prompt drift, hallucination mitigation). You use AI development tools daily and have opinions about how to use them well.
- Follow AI Trends – Actively experiments with emerging AI tools and techniques. Tries the betas, conducts the research, and brings back what works—turning curiosity into practical improvements for the team and the systems you build.
- Cloud-Native – Proficient in cloud environments like AWS, GCP, or Vercel.
- Security Focused – You design systems with security in the forefront. You understand AI failure modes, research emerging risks, and incorporate guardrails and evals from the start.
- Collaborative – Adept at working across technical and business functions, balancing rapid prototyping with long-term architecture planning.
- Product-Minded – Thinks beyond code to design systems and experiences that are scalable, maintainable, and valuable to end users.
- Agile Builder – Thrives in fast-moving environments, comfortable testing new ideas quickly while maintaining high standards for quality and reliability.

Align your degree to Bigcommerce's specialty occupation roles
E-3 requires a direct connection between your degree field and the role you're applying for. At Bigcommerce, software engineering and data roles demand a computer science or related technical degree, not just any bachelor's. Check the O*NET profile for your target job title before applying.
Research Bigcommerce's LCA filings before your interview
Bigcommerce files a Labor Condition Application with DOL before sponsoring any E-3 hire. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up prevailing wage levels for your role and location. Walking into your interview knowing the wage floor signals preparation and reduces salary negotiation friction.
Target product and engineering teams with Australian hiring precedent
Bigcommerce's technology and software focus means E-3 sponsorship activity clusters in engineering, data, and product management. When applying, prioritize job postings from these departments and tailor your application to platform-specific skills like API development, ecommerce infrastructure, or analytics tooling.
Clarify consular processing versus change of status with your recruiter
If you're already in the U.S. on another visa, Bigcommerce's HR team needs to know early whether you'll change status domestically or process at an Australian consulate. Each path has different LCA timing requirements, and confirming this before your offer stage avoids delays in the filing timeline.
Use Migrate Mate to prepare your E-3 filing documents ahead of offer
Before Bigcommerce finalizes your offer, use Migrate Mate to organize your credentials, confirm your degree meets specialty occupation standards, and understand what the LCA and DS-160 process looks like. Starting early means you're ready to move the moment HR initiates sponsorship.
Confirm Bigcommerce's E-Verify enrollment before accepting your offer
Bigcommerce must be enrolled in E-Verify to legally employ E-3 holders who enter on consular-processed visas. Ask your recruiter or HR contact to confirm enrollment status during the offer stage, not after you've given notice to your current employer. USCIS lists E-3 employment authorization requirements clearly for both parties.
Commerce E-3 Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Bigcommerce sponsor E-3 visas?
Yes, Bigcommerce sponsors E-3 visas for Australian professionals in qualifying specialty occupation roles. Sponsorship activity is concentrated in technology and software functions, including engineering, data, and product management. As with all E-3 sponsorships, Bigcommerce must file a certified Labor Condition Application with DOL before you can apply for the visa.
Which roles at Bigcommerce typically qualify for E-3 sponsorship?
E-3 sponsorship at Bigcommerce is most common in software engineering, data engineering, product management, and technical program management roles. These positions align with the specialty occupation requirement because they demand a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field such as computer science, information systems, or engineering.
How do I start the E-3 application process at Bigcommerce?
Once Bigcommerce extends a conditional offer, their HR or immigration team files an LCA with DOL, which typically certifies within seven business days. You then complete the DS-160 online, schedule a visa interview at a U.S. consulate in Australia, and present your LCA, offer letter, and credentials at the appointment. USCIS provides detailed E-3 documentation requirements on their visa pages.
How long does E-3 sponsorship take at Bigcommerce?
The LCA certification step usually takes around seven business days. Consulate appointment availability in Sydney, Melbourne, or Perth drives most of the overall timeline variation. From a signed offer letter to visa stamp, most applicants complete the process in four to eight weeks, though consulate backlogs during peak periods can extend this window.
How do I find and apply for E-3 jobs at Bigcommerce?
Search Bigcommerce's careers page for open roles in engineering, data, and product, then filter by U.S. locations. Migrate Mate lists verified E-3-sponsoring employers including Bigcommerce, so you can confirm sponsorship history and apply directly. Mention your E-3 eligibility early in recruiter conversations to avoid progressing far into a process before sponsorship is confirmed.
What is the prevailing wage for E-3 sponsorship at Bigcommerce?
E-3 employers must pay at least the prevailing wage, determined when they file a Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor. The rate is based on the role, location, and experience level, ensuring Australian hires are paid comparably to U.S. workers in the same position. You can look up prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
