Document Your Fleet Maintenance Certifications Thoroughly
Gather ASE certifications, CDL-adjacent training records, and any manufacturer-specific credentials before applying. First Student prioritizes mechanics who can demonstrate formal qualifications for diesel and school bus systems, which strengthens your PERM labor certification case.
Target Depots With Active Mechanic Openings
First Student operates regional depots, and hiring decisions often sit at the local level. Search by location and filter for Maintenance postings at specific facilities, since sponsorship decisions are typically made by the regional manager overseeing that depot.
Understand the EB-3 Skilled Worker Category for Trades
Maintenance roles at First Student typically fall under EB-3, which covers skilled workers requiring at least two years of training or experience. USCIS processing for this category involves a PERM labor certification through DOL before the petition is filed, so expect a multi-stage timeline.
Ask Recruiters About PERM Filing Timelines Upfront
During your offer stage, confirm whether First Student's HR team handles PERM filings in-house or through outside counsel. DOL PERM audits can add months to the process, so understanding their workflow helps you plan your immigration status bridge accurately.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Active Maintenance Postings
Filter for Maintenance roles at transportation and logistics employers with verified sponsorship history. Migrate Mate surfaces First Student openings alongside employer sponsorship data, so you can prioritize applications where Green Card pathways are already established.
Verify Your Work Authorization Aligns With Bus Fleet Operations
First Student uses E-Verify across its operations, so your employment eligibility must be confirmed before your start date. If you're in a grace period or transitioning status, align your offer acceptance and I-94 dates carefully to avoid gaps that delay onboarding.

Find Maintenance at First Student JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does First Student sponsor H-1B visas for Maintenances?
First Student does not typically sponsor H-1B visas for Maintenance roles. H-1B requires a specialty occupation tied to a bachelor's degree in a specific field, and most fleet maintenance positions are classified as skilled trades rather than degree-dependent specialties. First Student's sponsorship activity for this function is concentrated in employment-based Green Card categories instead.
Which visa types are commonly used for Maintenance roles at First Student?
Employment-based Green Card pathways are the primary route, specifically EB-2 and EB-3. Most Maintenance positions align with the EB-3 skilled worker category, which covers roles requiring at least two years of training or demonstrated experience. The process involves a PERM labor certification filed with DOL, followed by an immigrant petition with USCIS.
What qualifications or experience does First Student expect for Maintenance roles?
First Student looks for mechanics with hands-on experience servicing diesel engines, school buses, or commercial fleet vehicles. ASE certifications are a strong signal, particularly in areas like brakes, electrical systems, and preventive maintenance. Familiarity with fleet management software and the ability to work within a structured depot environment also factor into hiring decisions.
How do I apply for Maintenance jobs at First Student?
You can search for open Maintenance positions directly on First Student's careers portal, filtering by region or depot location. For a broader view of openings alongside sponsorship data, Migrate Mate lists First Student Maintenance roles and helps you identify which locations have active hiring. Apply early since depot-level roles fill quickly when positions open.
How do I plan my immigration timeline for a Green Card through First Student?
The EB-3 pathway through First Student begins with a PERM labor certification filed by your employer with DOL, which can take six months to over a year depending on audit risk. After PERM approval, First Student files an I-140 petition with USCIS. Priority date backlogs vary significantly by country of birth, so check the State Department Visa Bulletin regularly to estimate your adjustment of status timeline.
