Align your degree to the posting
FIU's Instructional Assistant roles frequently require a degree in the subject area being taught. Before applying, confirm your credentials map directly to the discipline listed, since a mismatch in field of study can complicate specialty occupation determinations during H-1B filing.
Target department-level hiring contacts
FIU hires Instructional Assistants at the department level across colleges like Business, Engineering, and Arts and Sciences. Reaching out to academic department coordinators, not just HR, can surface openings before they appear on the central jobs portal.
Request your LCA before your start date
Your employer must file a certified Labor Condition Application with the DOL before USCIS can process your H-1B petition. At a large university like FIU, international office timelines can run several months, so confirm the LCA is filed well ahead of your intended start date.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified openings
FIU posts Instructional Assistant roles across multiple portals and they fill quickly. Use Migrate Mate to filter for FIU positions that have confirmed visa sponsorship so you're only spending time on roles where sponsorship is already on the table.
Prepare for PERM if seeking permanent residence
FIU has sponsored EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards for academic staff, including instructional roles. If permanent residence is your goal, ask the hiring department early whether the position is eligible for PERM labor certification, since the process requires the role to be a permanent, full-time opening.

Find Instructional Assistant at Florida International University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Florida International University sponsor H-1B visas for Instructional Assistants?
Yes, FIU sponsors H-1B visas for Instructional Assistant roles. The university's Office of Global Talent Management handles petitions and works with departments to file the required Labor Condition Application through DOL before USCIS receives the H-1B petition. Full-time, continuing positions are the most likely to qualify, so confirm the role's permanent status during the interview process.
Which visa types are commonly used for Instructional Assistant roles at Florida International University?
FIU commonly supports H-1B, TN, F-1 OPT, and F-1 CPT for Instructional Assistant positions. F-1 students currently enrolled at FIU frequently use CPT for these roles, while graduates use OPT. Canadian and Mexican nationals with qualifying academic backgrounds can pursue TN status. For longer-term appointments, FIU has also sponsored EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card pathways through PERM labor certification.
How do I apply for Instructional Assistant jobs at Florida International University?
Applications go through FIU's official careers portal, but many roles are also listed on Migrate Mate, where you can filter specifically for positions with confirmed visa sponsorship. When applying, tailor your application to the subject area of the department, highlight any prior teaching or tutoring experience, and be explicit about your visa status so the hiring department can loop in the international office early in the process.
What qualifications and experience does FIU expect for Instructional Assistant positions?
Most Instructional Assistant postings at FIU require at least a bachelor's degree in the relevant academic discipline, and many prefer or require a master's degree. Prior classroom support, tutoring, or lab instruction experience in that field strengthens your application significantly. Some departments also require demonstrated proficiency in specific software, lab methods, or curriculum platforms tied to the courses being supported.
How do I plan my timeline if I need visa sponsorship for an FIU Instructional Assistant role?
Timeline depends on your current status. If you're on OPT, confirm your remaining authorization period covers the projected start date. For H-1B sponsorship, FIU's international office needs several months of lead time to prepare the LCA and petition. USCIS standard processing typically runs three to six months, and premium processing can reduce that to around 15 business days if FIU elects to pay for it.
