Target roles with deep technical specialization
Microsoft's Green Card filings concentrate heavily in software engineering, machine learning, and cloud infrastructure. Roles requiring specialized technical depth in areas like Azure, AI research, or distributed systems are where permanent sponsorship is most consistently offered.
Understand Microsoft's internal immigration team
Microsoft has a dedicated in-house immigration team that manages Green Card cases. Ask your recruiter early about the process, they can clarify which petition category applies to your role and what the expected internal timeline looks like.
Ask about PERM sponsorship during the offer stage
At Microsoft, Green Card sponsorship is usually discussed after joining, not during hiring. Once you're inside and performing well, raise the conversation with your manager and HR partner, most teams begin PERM after one year of employment.
Use Migrate Mate to verify active sponsorship before applying
Not every Microsoft role leads to Green Card sponsorship. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history, helping you prioritize roles at Microsoft that have a documented track record of filing.
Consider Microsoft's research and product divisions
Microsoft Research and senior product roles often involve highly specialized work that aligns well with EB-2 National Interest Waiver eligibility. If your background is research-oriented, it's worth exploring whether the NIW path is available to you.
Microsoft Green Card Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Microsoft sponsor Green Card visas?
Yes, Microsoft is one of the most active Green Card sponsors in the U.S. technology sector. The company files permanent residence petitions across a wide range of roles, with the heaviest concentration in software engineering, data science, and cloud infrastructure. Sponsorship is typically initiated after an employee has been with the company for around a year and is performing well in their role.
Which roles and departments at Microsoft typically receive Green Card sponsorship?
Software engineering, machine learning, product management, and Microsoft Research are the departments where Green Card sponsorship is most common. Roles requiring deep specialization in Azure, AI, or enterprise software tend to be prioritized. Microsoft is less likely to sponsor Green Card for generalist, sales, or entry-level positions where the specialty occupation case is harder to establish.
How do I start the Green Card process at Microsoft?
Once you're employed at Microsoft, the process typically begins with your HR partner or immigration team initiating a PERM labor certification filing with the Department of Labor. Microsoft works with outside immigration counsel to manage this. Your role is to provide accurate employment history, education credentials, and any supporting documents the attorneys request. Proactively ask your manager about eligibility after your first performance cycle.
How long does the Green Card process take at Microsoft?
The timeline depends heavily on your country of birth. For applicants born outside of India and China, the PERM and I-140 stages can take one to three years, after which a Green Card may be available relatively quickly. For applicants born in India, per-country backlogs can extend the wait significantly beyond that. Microsoft's immigration team can give you a realistic estimate based on your specific situation.
How do I find Microsoft jobs that include Green Card sponsorship?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by verified sponsorship history, making it easier to find Microsoft roles where Green Card filings are part of the employment pattern. Since not every Microsoft posting will explicitly state Green Card sponsorship, using a platform that tracks actual filing data gives you a clearer picture than relying on job descriptions alone. Focus your search on technical and research-oriented roles, where sponsorship rates are highest.
What is the prevailing wage for Green Card sponsorship at Microsoft?
Employers sponsoring a Green Card through the PERM labor certification process must pay at least the prevailing wage for the role. The Department of Labor determines this rate based on the specific job title, location, and experience level. The prevailing wage is locked in during the PERM filing and applies through the entire Green Card process. You can look up current rates using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
