About the NC State College of Education
As one of the nation’s top-ranked colleges of education, NC State’s College of Education leads the way in North Carolina in preparing extraordinary educators, conducting transformational research, and engaging communities where they are to improve the educational outcomes of all learners and advance the greater good.
The college’s faculty are widely-recognized thought leaders who use their research to transform the practice of teaching, learning, and leading. They have particular strengths in improving technology-enhanced learning and teaching; fostering community-based learning and PK-16 partnerships; and innovating leadership and workforce development, educational policy, and evaluation. About two-thirds of the faculty are grant active. They are engaged in over 225 active projects totaling $151 million, making them the most productive in terms of research activity compared with other colleges of education in North Carolina and among the Top 5% in the nation. In FY24, the college’s research expenditures exceeded $20 million.
The college has over 1,600 students studying across five graduate certificates, seven undergraduate majors, two undergraduate minors, 13 master’s degrees, three Ph.D., and two Ed.D. programs housed in three academic departments: Educational Leadership, Policy, and Human Development; Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education; and Teacher Education and Learning Sciences, with approximately 130 tenure-track and professional-track faculty, 110 support and professional staff, and about 160 graduate and teaching assistants. The College of Education is also home to the Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research, the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation, and Elevate, NC State’s postsecondary education program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The college has over 18,000 living alumni, with over 6,000 working in public schools in every county in North Carolina. Those who are teachers rate among the highest in effectiveness on surveys of school employers in North Carolina.
NC State promotes an integrated approach to problem solving that transforms lives and provides leadership for social, economic, and technological development across North Carolina and around the world. NC State’s land grant mission of teaching, research and service is dedicated to the service of North Carolina and its people. Applicants are encouraged to review the institution’s mission, vision and strategic plan, and consider how their background, interest and experience would enable them to support the university.
ELPHD
The Department of Education Leadership, Policy, and Human Development (ELPHD) comprises 40 full-time faculty members and more than 750 students. ELPHD advances education through scholarship, leadership, and advocacy. Faculty in ELPHD prepare counselors, educational leaders, and workplace professionals who are committed to improve education—from K-12 schools, to community colleges and universities, to workplace training—through applied theory, rigorous research, professional ethics, and data-driven best practice. ELPHD offers graduate programs in Adult and Lifelong Education; Community College Leadership; Counselor Education; Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis; Educational Leadership; and Higher Education Opportunity, Equity, and Justice. The department emphasizes exemplary scholarship, teaching, and service in the context of a university education and has a vibrant research culture that inspires and guides students through teaching, advising, and dissertation supervision. As researchers and teachers, the faculty explore complex and pressing contemporary issues and problems facing education and society with a view toward solutions that will make a real, positive difference for students and higher education institutions.
The Master of School Administration (MSA) program is radically different from traditional MSAs, also known as NC State Educational Leadership Academy (NELA). NELA is a two-year, full-time residency-based principal preparation program that is a solution to the stubborn problem of recruiting and retaining effective leaders for high-poverty, historically low-performing schools. Derived from research-based best practices, we utilize a nationally exemplar rigorous selection process and then prepare principals through a context-specific, experiential program. Participants demonstrate their leadership skills through solving authentic school problems with the support of a cohort director, a trained principal mentor, and an individual executive coach. NELA ensures integration between theory and practice through courses, specialized trainings, state and national conference travel, job-embedded assignments, year-long principal residency, and an electronic portfolio. Graduates make a four-year, post-degree commitment to work in local high-need schools, thus, providing partner school districts a robust leadership pipeline and succession plan. The NC Principal Fellows program funds the NELA program.

Job Roles at North Carolina State University
How to Get Visa Sponsorship in North Carolina State University Green Card Visa Sponsorship Jobs USA
Target research and faculty roles first
NC State's strongest Green Card sponsorship activity centers on tenure-track faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and research scientists. These roles are most likely to trigger PERM labor certification, especially in STEM and engineering departments where specialized expertise is difficult to source domestically.
Understand the EB-2 vs. EB-3 distinction for university hires
Faculty and research positions at NC State often qualify for EB-2 based on advanced degree requirements, while professional staff roles may fall under EB-3. Knowing which category applies to your target role helps you set realistic timeline expectations before accepting an offer.
Build your case during the H-1B or J-1 period
Most NC State Green Card sponsorships begin after an employee has demonstrated value on a temporary visa. Use your initial years to document publications, grants, and institutional contributions, all of which strengthen the employer's justification for initiating PERM.
Ask about sponsorship policy early in the hiring process
NC State's HR and international employment offices handle Green Card filings, but individual departments vary in their willingness to sponsor. Raise the topic directly during the offer negotiation stage rather than after you've started, so expectations are clear from both sides.
Filter for verified Green Card sponsors before applying
Not every university job listing will mention sponsorship. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history, helping you focus your applications on NC State roles where Green Card support is genuinely on the table.
Account for PERM recruitment timelines in your planning
NC State must complete a supervised PERM labor market test before filing your Green Card petition. This recruitment process takes several months before the I-140 petition can even be filed, so starting conversations with your department well in advance is essential.

Does North Carolina State University sponsor Green Card visas?
Yes, North Carolina State University sponsors Green Card visas for eligible employees. Sponsorship is most common for faculty, research scientists, and specialized professional staff in roles where NC State has demonstrated difficulty finding qualified U.S. workers. The process typically begins after an employee is established in their role on a temporary work visa such as H-1B or J-1.
Which roles and departments at NC State typically receive Green Card sponsorship?
Green Card sponsorship at NC State is most concentrated in academic and research-intensive areas, including engineering, computer science, life sciences, and agriculture, reflecting the university's broader research mission. Tenure-track faculty positions and postdoctoral research roles are the most consistent candidates for PERM labor certification, though specialized administrative and technical staff positions are also sponsored on a case-by-case basis.
How does the Green Card application process work at North Carolina State University?
NC State's Office for International Students and Scholars coordinates with HR and the sponsoring department to initiate PERM labor certification through the Department of Labor. Once PERM is certified, NC State files an I-140 immigrant petition with USCIS on the employee's behalf. If a visa number is immediately available based on your country of birth and preference category, you can then apply for adjustment of status or consular processing.
How long does the Green Card process take at North Carolina State University?
The timeline varies significantly depending on your country of birth and the visa preference category that applies to your role. The PERM and I-140 stages together can take anywhere from one to two years. For applicants born in India or China, priority date backlogs in the EB-2 and EB-3 categories can extend the overall wait considerably beyond that initial filing period.
How do I improve my chances of getting Green Card sponsorship at NC State?
Securing a role in a department with an established pattern of international hiring is the most reliable starting point. Demonstrating clear specialization that justifies the PERM recruitment process strengthens your employer's case significantly. Migrate Mate can help you identify verified NC State job listings where sponsorship is realistic, so you're not applying blind. Once hired, raising the Green Card conversation early and maintaining strong performance records helps move the process forward.
What is the prevailing wage for Green Card sponsorship at North Carolina State University?
Employers sponsoring a Green Card through the PERM labor certification process must pay at least the prevailing wage for the role. The Department of Labor determines this rate based on the specific job title, location, and experience level. The prevailing wage is locked in during the PERM filing and applies through the entire Green Card process. You can look up current rates using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
