Match your credentials to EB pathway criteria
UTHealth Houston files under EB-1B for outstanding researchers, EB-2 for advanced-degree professionals, and EB-3 for skilled positions requiring a bachelor's. Knowing which category fits your role before you apply shapes how you frame publications, citations, and clinical credentials in your application materials.
Target departments with active research funding
Green Card sponsorship at UTHealth Houston clusters in grant-funded research labs and clinical science departments where retaining specialized talent is a budget priority. Focus your applications on faculty, postdoctoral, and research scientist roles tied to NIH or similar external funding cycles.
Prepare your prevailing wage documentation early
Before PERM labor certification begins, DOL requires UTHealth Houston to certify your offered salary meets the prevailing wage for your role and location. Run your job title through the OFLC Wage Search so you understand the wage tier your position falls into before negotiations start.
Understand the PERM recruitment window requirements
PERM requires UTHealth Houston to conduct a documented recruitment test showing no qualified U.S. workers are available. This process takes months and must be completed before your I-140 petition is filed, so raise Green Card sponsorship discussions with HR well before your current status renewal deadline.
Use Migrate Mate to track UTHealth Houston's filing history
Reviewing an employer's actual Green Card filing history tells you which job titles and departments have moved through PERM and I-140 before. Use Migrate Mate to see UTHealth Houston's sponsorship patterns by role so you can target positions with a demonstrated path to permanent residence.
Align your O*NET occupation profile with your job duties
USCIS scrutinizes whether your actual job duties match the specialty occupation or degree requirement claimed in the petition. Cross-reference your role's task list against the O*NET occupation profile for your job title so your offer letter and labor certification reflect language consistent with USCIS standards.
UTHealth Houston Green Card Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does UTHealth Houston sponsor Green Card visas?
Yes, UTHealth Houston sponsors Green Card visas for qualifying employees. Sponsorship is most common in research, clinical science, and academic faculty roles where the institution depends on retaining specialized international talent. The pathway typically runs through PERM labor certification followed by an I-140 immigrant visa petition filed by the employer with USCIS.
Which roles and departments at UTHealth Houston typically receive Green Card sponsorship?
Green Card sponsorship at UTHealth Houston is concentrated in research-intensive and clinical departments, including biomedical sciences, neurology, oncology, and public health. Postdoctoral researchers, research scientists, and specialized clinical faculty are among the most commonly sponsored roles. Administrative and general support positions are rarely sponsored for permanent residence.
How do I start the Green Card process at UTHealth Houston?
The process begins with your department and HR agreeing to sponsor you, after which UTHealth Houston initiates PERM labor certification through DOL. Once PERM is approved, the institution files an I-140 petition with USCIS on your behalf. You should raise sponsorship discussions during your offer negotiation or annual review, not after your current visa status is close to expiring.
How long does the Green Card process take at UTHealth Houston?
PERM labor certification alone typically takes six to twelve months, and USCIS I-140 processing adds additional time depending on whether premium processing is used. If your country of birth has a visa backlog, the wait for an available priority date through the Department of State can extend the overall timeline significantly beyond the initial filing stages.
How do I find open Green Card-sponsored jobs at UTHealth Houston?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by employer sponsorship history, so you can identify UTHealth Houston positions where Green Card filing has occurred before. Targeting roles in departments with documented PERM filings increases your chances of landing in a position where the institution already has an established sponsorship process and institutional knowledge of the requirements.
What is the prevailing wage for Green Card sponsorship at UTHealth Houston?
Employers sponsoring a Green Card through the PERM labor certification process must pay at least the prevailing wage for the role. The Department of Labor determines this rate based on the specific job title, location, and experience level. The prevailing wage is locked in during the PERM filing and applies through the entire Green Card process. You can look up current rates using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
