Obtain ASE Certifications Before Applying
Group 1 Automotive dealerships expect Maintenance Technicians to hold current ASE credentials. Securing relevant certifications before you apply strengthens your specialty occupation argument and gives hiring managers a concrete reason to open a visa sponsorship conversation.
Target Dealerships in High-Vacancy Markets
Group 1 operates across multiple states with uneven technician demand. Focusing on locations where open Maintenance Technician roles have been posted the longest increases your odds of finding a manager willing to pursue sponsorship rather than wait for a local hire.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Sponsoring Dealerships
Not every Group 1 location has sponsored a Maintenance Technician role. Search Migrate Mate to surface the specific dealerships and job postings where sponsorship has occurred, so you apply where the path is clearest rather than guessing across the entire network.
Understand TN Eligibility for Canadian and Mexican Applicants
If you hold Canadian or Mexican citizenship, the TN visa classification can cover certain technical and engineering-adjacent roles. Confirm with your prospective Group 1 hiring manager whether your specific Maintenance Technician duties fall within an eligible USMCA occupation category before your start date.
Track Your OPT or Grace Period Against H-1B Filing Deadlines
H-1B petitions must be filed by April 1 for an October 1 start. If your F-1 OPT expires before then, map your remaining authorized days against USCIS cap-gap rules to confirm you can keep working at Group 1 without a status gap while your petition is pending.

Find Maintenance Technician at Group 1 Automotive JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Group 1 Automotive sponsor H-1B visas for Maintenance Technicians?
Group 1 Automotive has sponsored H-1B visas for workers in technical roles, including Maintenance Technician positions. Sponsorship decisions are made at the dealership or regional level, so the outcome depends on the specific location and hiring manager. Roles requiring specialized diagnostic or equipment skills tend to generate stronger sponsorship cases under the specialty occupation standard USCIS applies.
How do I apply for Maintenance Technician jobs at Group 1 Automotive?
You can browse and apply for open Maintenance Technician positions directly through Group 1 Automotive's careers site, or find verified sponsorship-friendly listings through Migrate Mate, which filters postings by visa type. When applying, note your visa status clearly in your cover letter and be prepared to discuss sponsorship logistics during the initial screening call.
Which visa types are commonly used for Maintenance Technician roles at Group 1 Automotive?
H-1B is the most common visa path for Maintenance Technicians at large dealership groups like Group 1. F-1 OPT and CPT are viable for recent graduates completing automotive or engineering programs. Canadian and Mexican citizens may qualify under the TN classification depending on their exact duties. J-1 visa holders in technical training programs have also been sponsored for shorter-term placements.
What qualifications does Group 1 Automotive expect from Maintenance Technician candidates seeking sponsorship?
Group 1 typically looks for ASE certifications, hands-on experience with automotive diagnostic equipment, and familiarity with dealership maintenance systems. For visa sponsorship purposes, your qualifications need to support a specialty occupation argument, which means documentation of formal technical training, a relevant degree, or demonstrated specialized experience that goes beyond general mechanical work.
How do I time my application to avoid a gap in work authorization while waiting for H-1B approval?
If you're on F-1 OPT, file your H-1B registration in March so a cap-gap extension covers you if your OPT expires before October 1. USCIS cap-gap rules allow you to keep working at Group 1 while your petition is pending, but only if your OPT was still valid on April 1 when the petition was filed.
