How to Get Visa Sponsorship in American University H-1B Visa Sponsorship Jobs USA
Focus on faculty and research postings
American University's H-1B sponsorship is concentrated in academic and research roles. Target faculty positions, postdoctoral appointments, and research staff openings, where universities routinely initiate H-1B petitions as part of standard hiring.
Engage the Office of International Affairs early
American University's international affairs office manages immigration filings. Contacting them before or shortly after receiving an offer clarifies the H-1B process, timeline expectations, and any institutional requirements specific to your department.
Understand the cap-exempt advantage
As a nonprofit university, American University qualifies as a cap-exempt H-1B employer. That means filings aren't subject to the annual lottery, and petitions can be submitted year-round, significantly reducing uncertainty for applicants.
Align your credentials with the specialty occupation standard
H-1B approval requires your role to qualify as a specialty occupation. For university roles, demonstrating that a specific degree in your field is a standard requirement, not just a preference, strengthens the petition considerably.
Search verified H-1B sponsors before applying broadly
Not all university job postings clearly indicate visa sponsorship availability. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history, helping you prioritize American University roles that are genuinely open to H-1B candidates.

Does American University sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, American University sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying positions. As a nonprofit institution, it is cap-exempt, meaning it can file H-1B petitions year-round without being subject to the annual lottery. Sponsorship is most common for faculty, research staff, and specialized professional roles across its academic departments.
Which roles and departments at American University typically receive H-1B sponsorship?
H-1B sponsorship at American University is most common in tenure-track and visiting faculty positions, postdoctoral research roles, and specialized administrative or professional staff positions requiring a specific degree field. Departments in international studies, law, public policy, and STEM-adjacent research programs are frequent sponsors, though sponsorship decisions are made case by case.
How do I navigate the H-1B application process at American University?
After receiving a job offer, American University's HR team and immigration counsel initiate the H-1B petition process. This includes preparing the Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor and filing the I-129 petition with USCIS. As a cap-exempt employer, filings can happen at any time of year, which removes the lottery pressure many applicants face elsewhere.
How do I find H-1B jobs at American University that are open to visa sponsorship?
The clearest approach is to look for job postings that explicitly state visa sponsorship is available, or to confirm sponsorship willingness directly with HR during early conversations. Migrate Mate helps by surfacing verified H-1B sponsors, so you can identify American University roles with a confirmed sponsorship history rather than guessing from generic job listings.
How long does H-1B sponsorship take at American University?
Because American University is cap-exempt, petitions aren't tied to the April lottery cycle. Standard USCIS processing for an I-129 petition runs several months, though premium processing can reduce that to a matter of weeks. Internal HR and legal preparation at the university typically adds several weeks before the petition is filed, so building lead time into your start date is advisable.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B jobs at American University?
H-1B employers must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is determined when they file the Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor. The rate is based on the role, location, and experience level, and ensures international hires are paid comparably to U.S. workers in the same position. You can look up prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
