Target roles with a clear H-1B track record
Microsoft's H-1B sponsorship is concentrated in software engineering, machine learning, and cloud infrastructure. Applying to roles in these areas gives you the best chance of landing a position where sponsorship is a standard part of the hiring process.
Apply well before the April H-1B lottery deadline
Microsoft initiates H-1B registrations in March each year. To be included, you need an offer in hand before registration opens, which means starting your application process at Microsoft several months in advance of the lottery window.
Highlight domain expertise, not just coding ability
Microsoft's technical interviews are rigorous, but H-1B sponsorship decisions also factor in specialization. Candidates with deep expertise in Azure, AI systems, or enterprise software are easier to sponsor because the specialty occupation case is stronger.
Use a platform that confirms real sponsorship history
Not every Microsoft job listing will mention visa sponsorship. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history, helping you focus your applications on roles where H-1B support is confirmed rather than assumed.
Understand how Microsoft handles cap-exempt roles
Some Microsoft positions connected to qualifying research or nonprofit partnerships may be filed as cap-exempt, bypassing the annual lottery entirely. If you're in a research-oriented role, ask your recruiter whether this pathway applies to your offer.
Build relationships through Microsoft's internship and new graduate pipelines
Microsoft's full-time H-1B sponsorship pipeline is heavily fed by its internship and university recruiting programs. Securing an internship or new graduate offer is one of the most reliable ways to enter the sponsorship process at Microsoft.
Microsoft H-1B Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Microsoft sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, Microsoft sponsors H-1B visas and is one of the most consistent H-1B sponsors in the United States. Sponsorship is standard practice across Microsoft's technical hiring, particularly for software engineering, data science, product management, and cloud roles. International candidates are regularly hired with the expectation that H-1B sponsorship will be part of the offer.
Which roles and departments at Microsoft typically receive H-1B sponsorship?
H-1B sponsorship at Microsoft is most common in software engineering, machine learning, cloud infrastructure, and technical program management. These roles align cleanly with the specialty occupation standard H-1B requires. Research positions, AI engineering, and cybersecurity are also strong areas. Business and operations roles can qualify but are less consistently sponsored.
How do I navigate the H-1B application process at Microsoft?
Once you receive an offer, Microsoft's in-house immigration team and outside counsel manage the H-1B petition on your behalf. You'll provide documentation including your degree credentials, employment history, and passport details. Microsoft handles the Labor Condition Application filing and USCIS petition preparation. Your main responsibility is responding promptly to document requests and keeping your immigration contact updated on any status changes.
How do I find H-1B sponsorship jobs at Microsoft?
Microsoft posts open roles on its careers site, but listings don't always specify visa sponsorship eligibility. Migrate Mate filters job opportunities by verified H-1B sponsorship history, so you can identify Microsoft roles where international candidates have been sponsored before, rather than applying blind and asking during the interview process.
What is the typical timeline for H-1B sponsorship at Microsoft?
The H-1B lottery registration opens in early March, with USCIS selecting registrations by late March. If selected, Microsoft files the full petition by April 1 for an October 1 start date. Premium processing is available and can reduce USCIS adjudication to a matter of weeks. From offer acceptance to authorization, most candidates should expect the process to span several months.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B jobs at Microsoft?
H-1B employers must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is determined when they file the Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor. The rate is based on the role, location, and experience level, and ensures international hires are paid comparably to U.S. workers in the same position. You can look up prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
