Align your degree to Smith+Nephew's specialty occupation standard
H-1B approval hinges on proving your role qualifies as a specialty occupation. For Smith+Nephew roles, your degree field must directly relate to the position, so a biomedical engineering or life sciences degree carries more weight than a general business credential when targeting R&D or clinical teams.
Research prevailing wage tiers before negotiating your offer
Smith+Nephew must file a Labor Condition Application certifying your wage meets DOL prevailing wage levels. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up wage levels for your role and metro area before your offer conversation, so you understand what the company is legally required to pay.
Target roles with a clear regulatory or engineering function
Smith+Nephew's H-1B sponsorship skews toward positions with a defined technical or regulatory function, such as quality systems engineers, regulatory affairs specialists, and clinical research associates. Generic operations or administrative roles are harder to qualify under the specialty occupation definition USCIS applies.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified Smith+Nephew H-1B filings
Before applying, search Migrate Mate to review Smith+Nephew's H-1B Labor Condition Application filing history by role and location. This shows which job titles and office sites have active sponsorship patterns, so you can prioritize positions where H-1B approvals have already been established.
Submit your application well before the April 1 cap deadline
H-1B petitions for cap-subject positions must be registered in March for an October 1 start date. At Smith+Nephew, coordinating offer acceptance and internal HR sign-off takes time, so start conversations with the hiring team at least three months before registration opens to avoid missing the window.
Confirm Smith+Nephew's E-Verify enrollment before accepting an offer
As a federal contractor operating in the medical device sector, Smith+Nephew is enrolled in E-Verify, which is required for employment verification. Confirming this early removes one variable from your offer assessment and signals that their HR team is equipped to process international worker documentation.
Smith+Nephew H-1B Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Smith+Nephew sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, Smith+Nephew sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying roles across its U.S. operations. Sponsorship is most common in technical, engineering, regulatory, and clinical functions where specialty occupation requirements are clearly met. Candidates should confirm sponsorship availability with the hiring team during early recruiting conversations, as not every open role is approved for H-1B support.
Which departments at Smith+Nephew typically receive H-1B sponsorship?
H-1B sponsorship at Smith+Nephew is most consistent in departments with defined technical requirements, including R&D, regulatory affairs, quality assurance, clinical operations, and medical device engineering. These roles align with the specialty occupation standard USCIS applies, meaning a direct-field degree is necessary and the position requires specialized knowledge.
How do I navigate the H-1B application process at Smith+Nephew?
Once Smith+Nephew extends an offer and confirms sponsorship, their HR or legal team files a Labor Condition Application with DOL and then submits an H-1B petition to USCIS. Your role is to provide credential documents, degree transcripts, and employment history. The process is employer-driven, but staying responsive to document requests keeps the timeline on track.
How long does H-1B processing take for Smith+Nephew employees?
Standard H-1B processing through USCIS runs several months from petition filing. Premium processing is available and reduces the adjudication window to a matter of weeks, though it carries an additional government fee typically covered by the employer. Cap-subject petitions filed in April cannot result in employment start dates before October 1 of the same year.
How do I find H-1B jobs at Smith+Nephew as an international candidate?
Search Migrate Mate to identify Smith+Nephew roles with confirmed H-1B filing history and filter by location and job function. When applying directly, address your work authorization status early in recruiter conversations to avoid late-stage surprises. Targeting roles in regulatory affairs or device engineering improves your chances of landing a position where sponsorship is already established.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B jobs at Smith+Nephew?
H-1B employers must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is determined when they file the Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor. The rate is based on the role, location, and experience level, and ensures international hires are paid comparably to U.S. workers in the same position. You can look up prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
