How to Get Visa Sponsorship in University of Washington H-1B Visa Sponsorship Jobs USA
Target research and academic departments first
UW's strongest H-1B sponsorship history sits in research-heavy departments and its medical centers. Postdoctoral researchers, faculty candidates, and clinical specialists are among the most commonly sponsored roles, prioritize these when searching.
Understand that UW's HR drives the process
University of Washington has a dedicated international services office that manages H-1B filings. Hiring managers rely on this team, so expect a structured process with defined timelines. Asking your recruiter early about their intake process is worth doing.
Apply before H-1B cap deadlines if you need a new visa
If you're not already in H-1B status, UW must file before the April 1 cap registration window. Roles posted in late fall or winter give you the best chance of aligning your start date with an approved petition.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified UW openings
Not every UW job listing states visa sponsorship clearly. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history, saving you from applying to roles that won't support an H-1B petition.
Cap-exempt status works in your favor
As a nonprofit university, UW qualifies as a cap-exempt employer. That means it can file H-1B petitions year-round without lottery exposure, a significant structural advantage if you missed the cap or need to transfer your existing status.
Tailor your application to UW's mission-driven hiring culture
UW prioritizes candidates who connect their expertise to research impact or educational outcomes. Framing your experience around academic contribution, grant-funded work, or public service strengthens your case during both hiring and H-1B documentation review.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Washington sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, University of Washington sponsors H-1B visas and does so on a consistent basis. As a nonprofit research university, UW is a cap-exempt employer, meaning it can file H-1B petitions at any time of year without going through the annual lottery. Its international services office handles filings directly, making the process more predictable than at many private employers.
Which roles and departments at University of Washington typically receive H-1B sponsorship?
H-1B sponsorship at UW is most common in research faculty positions, postdoctoral roles, clinical and medical staff at UW Medicine, and technical positions in IT and data science. STEM departments across the College of Engineering, the Paul G. Allen School, and the School of Medicine generate the highest volume of sponsored roles. Administrative and general support positions are less frequently sponsored.
How do I navigate the H-1B application process at University of Washington?
Once UW extends a job offer, your hiring department works with the UW International Scholar Operations office to initiate the H-1B petition. You'll provide documentation of your qualifications, and UW's legal team prepares and files the I-129 petition with USCIS. Because UW is cap-exempt, filings can happen year-round. Staying responsive to documentation requests keeps the process on schedule.
How long does the H-1B sponsorship process take at University of Washington?
Standard USCIS processing for an H-1B petition typically takes several months, though UW can request premium processing to receive a decision within a few weeks when timing is critical. Cap-exempt status means UW isn't tied to the October 1 start date that cap-subject employers face, giving both the university and the candidate more scheduling flexibility.
How do I find H-1B jobs at University of Washington that confirm sponsorship?
UW posts openings through its own careers portal, but sponsorship language in individual listings can be inconsistent. Migrate Mate tracks verified H-1B sponsors and lets you filter specifically for UW roles with confirmed sponsorship history, which removes the guesswork. Combining that with direct outreach to UW's hiring departments gives you the clearest picture of available opportunities.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B jobs at University of Washington?
H-1B employers must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is determined when they file the Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor. The rate is based on the role, location, and experience level, and ensures international hires are paid comparably to U.S. workers in the same position. You can look up prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
