Verify your bar admission meets state requirements
Husch Blackwell operates across multiple states, and Legal Counsel roles often require admission to a specific state bar. Confirm which jurisdiction the role sits in and check whether reciprocity or a motion admission is available before applying.
Position your JD as a specialty occupation credential
USCIS scrutinizes Legal Counsel H-1B petitions more than technical roles. Document that the position requires a JD in a specific legal discipline, not just any bachelor's degree, to strengthen the specialty occupation argument before your employer files Form I-129.
Target practice groups with active hiring momentum
Husch Blackwell's Energy, Financial Services, and Agribusiness groups post Legal Counsel roles more consistently than other practice areas. Focusing your application on these groups increases the chance of landing in a team that already has bandwidth to manage sponsorship paperwork.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open Legal Counsel roles
Not every Husch Blackwell Legal Counsel posting makes sponsorship eligibility clear upfront. Use Migrate Mate to filter roles by visa type so you spend time only on positions where H-1B or TN sponsorship is a confirmed possibility.
Raise sponsorship timing before the offer stage
Law firms move fast once they've chosen a candidate. Ask your recruiting contact during a second-round interview whether the firm's immigration team can begin LCA preparation immediately after an offer is signed, avoiding delays caused by internal approval queues.
Prepare a TN application if you hold Canadian or Mexican citizenship
Legal Counsel roles can qualify under the TN visa category for Canadian and Mexican nationals, and TN status requires no USCIS petition or lottery. Have your offer letter and law degree credentials ready so the DOL-required documentation is complete before you cross the border.

Find Legal Counsel at Husch Blackwell JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Husch Blackwell sponsor H-1B visas for Legal Counsels?
Husch Blackwell has sponsored H-1B visas for legal professionals, including Legal Counsel roles. Sponsorship depends on the specific practice group, the legal specialty required, and whether the position qualifies as a specialty occupation under USCIS criteria. Roles requiring a JD in a defined legal field are stronger candidates for approval than general in-house advisory positions.
How do I apply for Legal Counsel jobs at Husch Blackwell?
Applications go through Husch Blackwell's careers portal, where Legal Counsel postings are listed by practice group and office location. You can also browse open roles filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate. Tailor your application to the specific practice area and, if sponsorship is a factor, confirm your visa status early in the process rather than waiting until an offer is extended.
Which visa types are commonly used for Legal Counsel roles at Husch Blackwell?
H-1B is the most common path for Legal Counsel roles at law firms, covering foreign nationals who hold a JD or equivalent and have a qualifying job offer. TN status is available for Canadian and Mexican citizens whose legal roles meet DOL criteria. F-1 OPT and CPT may apply for early-career hires during their post-graduation authorization window, and J-1 is occasionally used for exchange visitor arrangements.
What qualifications does Husch Blackwell expect for Legal Counsel positions?
Most Legal Counsel roles at Husch Blackwell require a JD from an accredited law school and active bar admission in the relevant state. Practice-specific experience matters more than general legal background for mid-level and senior roles. Husch Blackwell's high-volume practice groups, including Energy and Financial Services, typically expect candidates with two or more years of directly relevant experience in that sector.
How do I time my H-1B application if I receive an offer from Husch Blackwell?
H-1B petitions are subject to an annual cap, with USCIS accepting registrations in March for an October 1 start date. If you receive an offer outside that window, you'll need to either start on F-1 OPT, explore cap-exempt options, or wait for the next filing cycle. Ask Husch Blackwell's immigration team to begin the Labor Condition Application with the DOL as soon as your offer letter is finalized to avoid losing time before the registration deadline.
