Align your research background with process nodes
Lam Research hires researchers focused on etch, deposition, and clean processes tied to specific technology nodes. Framing your CV around relevant process areas, rather than general physics or chemistry, signals direct fit to their sponsorship-worthy roles.
Use Migrate Mate to surface open Research roles
Lam Research posts research positions across multiple locations and specializations. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for roles at Lam that list visa sponsorship, so you're applying where sponsorship is already confirmed rather than guessing.
Prepare a strong publication and IP record
Research hires at semiconductor equipment companies face rigorous technical review. Lam Research's talent teams look for evidence of original contributions, such as patents, conference papers, or process innovations, as indicators of the specialized knowledge that justifies a visa petition.
Understand how PERM shapes your long-term path
If Lam Research sponsors you for an EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card, the DOL PERM labor certification process requires proving no qualified U.S. workers are available. Starting that conversation with HR during the offer stage, not months later, keeps your timeline on track.

Find Research at Lam Research JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Lam Research sponsor H-1B visas for Research roles?
Yes, Lam Research sponsors H-1B visas for research positions. The company has a well-established sponsorship process for roles in areas like etch, deposition, and materials research. If you're transitioning from F-1 OPT, Lam's HR and legal teams are experienced with cap-gap situations and the USCIS H-1B registration cycle that opens each March.
How do I apply for Research jobs at Lam Research?
Apply directly through Lam Research's careers portal, where research roles are listed by function and location. To find positions that explicitly support visa sponsorship, browse Migrate Mate, which filters Lam Research openings by sponsorship status. Tailoring your application to a specific process area, such as plasma etch or ALD, improves your chances of passing the initial technical screen.
Which visa types does Lam Research commonly sponsor for Research positions?
Lam Research sponsors H-1B, TN, J-1, and F-1 OPT and CPT for research roles, and supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card pathways for longer-term employees. The right category depends on your nationality, degree level, and career stage. Canadian and Mexican nationals in research science roles may be eligible for TN status without going through the H-1B lottery.
What qualifications does Lam Research expect for Research roles?
Most research positions at Lam Research require at least a master's degree, and many principal or senior researcher roles expect a PhD in materials science, chemical engineering, physics, or electrical engineering. Beyond academic credentials, Lam values hands-on experience with semiconductor fabrication tools or process development, particularly in etch, deposition, or surface chemistry.
How long does the sponsorship process take for a Research hire at Lam Research?
Timeline depends on visa type. H-1B standard processing takes three to five months after USCIS receives the petition, with premium processing available to cut that to around 15 business days. PERM-based Green Card sponsorship typically takes one to three years depending on your country of birth and priority date. Starting the conversation with Lam's HR team at the offer stage, not after onboarding, avoids unnecessary delays.
