Get your credentials evaluated before applying
Academic medical centers like MCW require CGFNS or NCSBN credential evaluation for internationally trained nurses. Start the evaluation process early since reports can take 8 to 12 weeks and you'll need them before any offer can move forward.
Target nursing roles tied to research units
MCW operates both clinical and research nursing functions. Research-affiliated roles often align more naturally with EB-2 sponsorship pathways because the advanced degree and specialized knowledge requirements are easier to document than in general floor nursing positions.
Confirm your state license is Wisconsin-eligible
Wisconsin is a Nurse Licensure Compact state, so an active multistate license from another compact state transfers. If you're coming from outside the U.S., you'll need a Wisconsin RN license before MCW can complete onboarding, so file your NCLEX application in parallel with your job search.
Ask HR which visa types they are currently filing
MCW sponsors multiple visa categories, but individual nursing departments may have preferences or active PERM timelines already in progress. Asking directly during the offer stage which pathway HR intends to use prevents surprises after you've accepted.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open nursing roles by sponsorship type
MCW posts nursing roles across multiple functions and not all listings signal sponsorship availability equally. Use Migrate Mate to filter MCW's open nursing positions specifically by the visa types you're eligible for, so you apply to roles where sponsorship is confirmed.
Understand the TN pathway if you hold Canadian or Mexican citizenship
Registered Nurse is a designated TN profession under USMCA. If you're Canadian or Mexican, TN status can be obtained at the port of entry without USCIS filing delays, making it a faster path to starting at MCW than waiting on H-1B processing.

Find Nursing at Medical College of Wisconsin JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Medical College of Wisconsin sponsor H-1B visas for Nursings?
Yes, Medical College of Wisconsin sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying nursing roles. As an academic medical institution, MCW is considered an H-1B cap-exempt employer under USCIS rules, which means it can file H-1B petitions at any time of year without entering the annual lottery. That's a significant advantage for internationally trained nurses who missed the regular cap selection.
How do I apply for Nursing jobs at Medical College of Wisconsin?
You can browse and apply for nursing positions directly through MCW's careers portal. To find roles where visa sponsorship is confirmed, use Migrate Mate to filter MCW's open nursing listings by the visa categories you're eligible for. Once you identify a target role, apply with a resume tailored to the specific nursing function and prepare your credential evaluation documents in advance.
Which visa types does Medical College of Wisconsin commonly use for Nursing roles?
MCW sponsors nursing candidates through several pathways including H-1B, TN, and F-1 OPT. For permanent residence, MCW has filed through EB-2 and EB-3 PERM-based categories depending on the role's degree requirements. Nurses with Canadian or Mexican citizenship often use TN status as a faster entry point before transitioning to a longer-term immigrant pathway.
What qualifications does Medical College of Wisconsin expect for sponsored Nursing roles?
Most sponsored nursing roles at MCW require an active Wisconsin RN license, a BSN or higher, and relevant clinical or research experience depending on the unit. Internationally trained nurses will also need a CGFNS or equivalent credential evaluation confirming their foreign nursing degree meets U.S. standards. Research-oriented roles may require additional specialty certifications or documented experience in academic or clinical research settings.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for Nursing roles at MCW?
Timeline depends on the visa pathway. H-1B petitions at MCW are cap-exempt, so USCIS standard processing runs roughly 3 to 6 months, with premium processing available to shorten that window. TN status for Canadian nurses can be granted same-day at the border. EB-3 PERM-based Green Card sponsorship is a multi-year process and typically runs alongside your nonimmigrant status rather than replacing it at the offer stage.
