Align your credentials to course needs
Community colleges like OCC typically require a master's degree in the specific subject you'd teach, not just a broadly related field. Verify your transcripts are evaluated by a NACES-approved credential evaluation service before applying.
Target departments with recurring vacancies
OCC posts Instructor openings across disciplines from allied health to business technology. Identify which departments advertise consistently throughout the academic year, since recurring postings signal ongoing hiring need and a stronger path to sponsorship.
Clarify sponsorship intent during the interview
Ask directly whether the department has worked with international faculty before. At community colleges, the hiring manager and HR may not automatically volunteer sponsorship details, so asking early prevents wasted time on both sides.
Understand H-1B cap-exempt status at OCC
Onondaga Community College is a nonprofit educational institution, which means H-1B petitions filed through OCC are cap-exempt. You can be sponsored outside the annual lottery window, so USCIS processing timelines are not tied to the April registration period.
Time your application around the academic hiring cycle
Most community college Instructor searches open in late fall or early spring for positions starting the following academic year. Submitting applications between November and February puts you in the primary hiring window and allows sufficient lead time for H-1B preparation.
Use Migrate Mate to track open Instructor roles
Instructor postings at OCC appear and close quickly. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for education roles with H-1B sponsorship so you can apply to verified openings at institutions like OCC before positions are filled.

Find Instructor at Onondaga Community College JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Onondaga Community College sponsor H-1B visas for Instructors?
Yes, Onondaga Community College has sponsored H-1B visas for Instructor roles. As a nonprofit educational institution, OCC qualifies as a cap-exempt employer, meaning petitions are not subject to the annual H-1B lottery. This allows the college to file with USCIS at any point in the year, which is a significant practical advantage for international candidates pursuing faculty positions.
How do I apply for Instructor jobs at Onondaga Community College?
Applications for Instructor positions at OCC are submitted through the college's official careers portal. Most postings require a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and transcripts. You can also use Migrate Mate to browse verified Instructor openings at OCC filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility, which helps you identify active roles before they close.
Which visa types are commonly used for Instructor roles at Onondaga Community College?
The H-1B is the primary work visa used for Instructor positions at OCC. Because teaching roles at accredited colleges typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field, they meet USCIS criteria for H-1B classification. J-1 exchange visitor status is sometimes used for short-term or visiting faculty arrangements, though it carries a two-year home residency requirement that affects future immigration plans.
What qualifications are expected for Instructor positions at Onondaga Community College?
Most Instructor roles at OCC require a master's degree in the subject area being taught, though some technical and allied health programs may accept a bachelor's degree combined with substantial professional experience. Prior teaching experience at the college level strengthens your application. For H-1B eligibility, your degree must be in a field directly related to the specific courses you'll teach, not a broadly adjacent discipline.
How do I know if OCC will start an H-1B petition before my current status expires?
Because OCC is cap-exempt, USCIS can begin processing your H-1B petition as soon as the college files, without waiting for an October 1 start date. Standard processing typically takes three to five months, and premium processing is available through USCIS for a faster decision. Confirm the college's internal HR timeline early in the offer stage so filing begins with adequate lead time before your current visa or OPT authorization ends.
