Role Overview
The Director of Engineering will report to the General Manager of Physical AI, and will be responsible for leading a multi-disciplinary engineering organization. In this senior leadership role, you will own the execution of the Physical AI Data Engine — the platform powering the next generation of Physical AI/Embodied AI. You will collaborate closely with Operations and GTM to guide product direction and help solve the data bottleneck that stands between today's robotics research and real-world deployment. This role requires significant ownership in a fast-paced environment and you will motivate internal teams to set the pace for business growth. Travel will come into play.
Key Responsibilities:
- Set and drive the technical vision across data collection infrastructure, teleoperation systems, ML training pipelines, model evaluation frameworks, annotation tooling, and research
- Lead a multidisciplinary engineering organization—spanning engineering managers, software engineers, ML engineers, and ML research scientists—while designing the organizational structure, talent strategy, and culture required to scale rapidly without compromising on quality or strategic alignment
- Maintain exceptional technical and operational excellence by deeply understanding team deliverables, asking incisive questions, identifying slipping standards early, and knowing precisely when to step in
- Drive cross-functional alignment across Engineering, Operations, and GTM on platform architecture, release processes, and shared priorities
- Collaborate with researchers and clients to architect and deliver scalable, production-grade data infrastructure tailored for complex robotics workloads
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science, or a related technical field
- 8+ years of engineering experience in fast-paced environments, including 4+ years direct people management demonstrated history of recruiting, mentoring, and developing high-performing technical teams through rapid growth and change
- Experience leading technical execution for complex hardware-software systems, with deep domain knowledge in Robotics, Autonomous Vehicles, Computer Vision, and/or Machine Learning strongly preferred
- Deep fluency in the ML development lifecycle — training pipelines, data flywheels, and evaluation frameworks as systems you've built and owned
- Comfortable leading teams across Python, C++, and TypeScript/Node stacks, distributed systems, cloud infrastructure (AWS, Kubernetes), and workflow orchestration (Temporal, Airflow)
- Proven ability to independently navigate, execute effectively amidst ambiguity, and strong attention to detail
- Strong operator and communicator to create tight feedback loops between teams, surface problems early, and drive decisions with clarity across technical and executive audiences
Nice to Have
- MS or PhD is a plus, though strong practical experience is equally valued.
- Hands-on experience with teleoperation systems (ALOHA, UMI, hand tracking), robotic hardware platforms, or imitation learning
- Background in sensor fusion, SLAM, or 3D data processing
- Experience scaling data collection systems globally

Align your credentials to AI infrastructure leadership
Scale AI's Engineering Manager roles sit at the intersection of ML systems and team leadership. Before applying, make sure your resume reflects direct experience managing teams that built data labeling, annotation, or AI training pipelines, not just general software engineering management.
Research Scale AI's LCA filings on DOL
DOL's OFLC public disclosure data shows the job titles and prevailing wage levels Scale AI has filed under. Checking this before your interview tells you what salary tier to expect and confirms the specific role title used in sponsorship paperwork.
Surface your visa type early with the recruiter
Scale AI sponsors multiple visa categories for engineering leadership roles. Clarify which type applies to you, whether H-1B, E-3, or TN, during the recruiter screen so the hiring team can route your offer through the right legal process without delays at the offer stage.
Prepare for cap-subject H-1B timing constraints
If you need a new H-1B and aren't already in cap-exempt status, your start date depends on the April lottery and an October 1 start. Plan your job search timeline around the USCIS registration window, which opens in March each year.
Use Migrate Mate to filter Engineering Manager openings
Scale AI posts Engineering Manager roles across product, infrastructure, and applied AI teams. Use Migrate Mate to filter open positions by visa type so you're only applying to roles where your specific sponsorship category is explicitly supported.
Request premium processing if your offer has a hard start date
USCIS premium processing for H-1B petitions guarantees a response within 15 business days. If Scale AI's offer includes a specific project or team onboarding deadline, ask your assigned immigration counsel whether the company will elect premium processing on your petition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Scale AI sponsor H-1B visas for Engineering Managers?
Yes, Scale AI sponsors H-1B visas for Engineering Manager roles. Because this is a specialty occupation requiring a relevant bachelor's degree or higher, the role typically qualifies under H-1B criteria. If you're subject to the cap, your petition enters the annual USCIS lottery with a potential October 1 start date. If you're transferring from an existing H-1B, Scale AI can file a cap-exempt transfer petition, allowing an earlier start.
How do I apply for Engineering Manager jobs at Scale AI?
Applications go through Scale AI's careers portal, where Engineering Manager roles are listed by team and product area. Roles span infrastructure, data operations, and applied AI functions, so reviewing the specific team's scope before applying helps you tailor your materials. You can also browse current openings filtered by visa sponsorship type on Migrate Mate to confirm which positions align with your work authorization situation before submitting.
Which visa types does Scale AI commonly use for Engineering Manager roles?
Scale AI sponsors H-1B, E-3 visa, TN visa, and F-1 OPT for Engineering Manager positions, along with immigrant pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards. E-3 visa is available to Australian citizens and offers a faster, lottery-free process. TN visa covers Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying professional categories. OPT gives F-1 graduates a window to work before transitioning to a longer-term sponsored status.
What qualifications does Scale AI expect for Engineering Manager candidates?
Scale AI's Engineering Manager roles typically require a computer science or engineering degree paired with hands-on experience leading software teams. Given the company's focus on AI data infrastructure, backgrounds in distributed systems, ML pipelines, or data engineering carry real weight. Leadership experience in fast-moving, high-throughput technical environments is common across the roles. For visa sponsorship purposes, your degree field needs to align with the specific role under USCIS specialty occupation standards.
How do I time my application around the H-1B filing process at Scale AI?
If you need a new cap-subject H-1B, the USCIS registration window opens in March and the lottery runs shortly after. Scale AI's legal team would need to submit your petition by April 1 for an October 1 start, so your offer should be finalized well before March. Starting your job search in the preceding fall gives you enough runway to clear interviews and allow Scale AI's immigration counsel time to prepare the filing.
