Frame your credentials around U.S. clinical standards
Select Medical operates in a highly regulated environment. Before applying, confirm your academic transcripts and any clinical certifications are formatted to reflect U.S. equivalencies, since healthcare internships often require documentation that aligns with state licensure boards.
Target sites with specialty hospital designations
Select Medical's sponsorship activity is concentrated in its specialty hospital and rehabilitation divisions. Prioritize those facility types when browsing open intern postings, as they tend to have more structured onboarding processes that accommodate immigration filing timelines.
Confirm OPT or CPT authorization before your start date
If you're on an F-1 visa, your DSO must authorize OPT or CPT before you begin any paid internship. USCIS requires work authorization to be active on day one, so submit your I-20 update request at least 90 days before your intended start.
Use Migrate Mate to identify open intern roles at Select Medical
Searching broadly wastes time. Migrate Mate filters specifically for Select Medical intern postings that have a sponsorship track record, so you're applying to roles where the hiring infrastructure for international candidates already exists.
Ask recruiters directly about H-1B filing timelines
H-1B cap-subject petitions must be filed by April 1 for an October 1 start. If your internship converts to a full-time role, confirm with the recruiter whether the offer timeline aligns with USCIS registration windows before accepting.
Understand how PERM affects your long-term path
Select Medical sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 green cards, both of which require a DOL PERM labor certification. For intern-to-hire conversions, ask whether the role's job duties are defined narrowly enough to support a PERM filing before your priority date matters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Select Medical sponsor H-1B visas for Interns?
Select Medical does sponsor H-1B visas, including for roles that can originate as internships and convert to full-time positions. Sponsorship is more common when an intern transitions into a permanent specialty or clinical role. If you're targeting an H-1B, confirm during the offer stage that the position qualifies as a specialty occupation under USCIS guidelines, which typically requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field directly related to the job duties.
How do I apply for Intern jobs at Select Medical?
You can browse and apply for intern roles through Select Medical's careers portal or through Migrate Mate, which surfaces Select Medical intern openings filtered by sponsorship eligibility. When applying, tailor your resume to highlight clinical or administrative experience relevant to Select Medical's rehabilitation and specialty hospital divisions. Follow up directly with recruiters to confirm visa sponsorship availability before investing significant time in the process.
Which visa types are commonly used for Intern roles at Select Medical?
The most common visa types for international interns at Select Medical are F-1 OPT or CPT during the internship itself, with H-1B and employment-based Green Card pathways available for candidates who transition into full-time roles. Select Medical sponsors both EB-2 and EB-3 classifications, which are relevant once you move beyond the internship stage and the company files a PERM labor certification with the DOL on your behalf.
What qualifications or experience are expected for Intern roles at Select Medical?
Expectations vary by division, but most clinical internships require active enrollment in an accredited healthcare program such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, or health administration. Administrative intern roles typically look for coursework in business, health informatics, or a related field. Hands-on clinical experience through prior placements strengthens your application significantly. Select Medical's specialty hospital and rehabilitation sites often have more defined competency requirements than general acute care settings.
How do I manage my immigration timeline when interning at Select Medical?
If you're on F-1 OPT, you have a finite authorization window, so align your internship end date and any full-time offer timeline with your OPT expiration. STEM OPT extensions can provide up to 24 additional months, but your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify. Select Medical's size and compliance infrastructure generally supports E-Verify participation, but confirm this with your HR contact before relying on a STEM extension for your stay.
