Align your credentials to U.S. standards early
Texas State evaluates Instructor applicants on degree equivalency to U.S. standards. If your degree is from outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency before applying so hiring committees can assess your qualifications without delays.
Target departments with active instructional needs
Teaching-focused Instructor roles at Texas State are often posted at the department level. Search by college, not just job title, and reach out to department coordinators directly to ask about upcoming instructional vacancies before they're publicly advertised.
Understand how J-1 fits short-term teaching roles
For visiting or exchange Instructor appointments, Texas State commonly uses the J-1 Exchange Visitor visa. Know that J-1 holders may face a two-year home residency requirement, which affects your ability to change to H-1B or pursue a Green Card afterward.
Ask HR about H-1B filing timelines at offer stage
H-1B cap-subject filings must be submitted in April for an October 1 start. When you receive an Instructor offer, confirm with Texas State's international office whether your role qualifies as cap-exempt through the university's nonprofit status, which can allow off-cycle filing.
Build a teaching portfolio that supports specialty occupation
USCIS requires H-1B petitions to demonstrate the role qualifies as a specialty occupation. For Instructor positions, your portfolio showing course design, syllabi, and subject-specific expertise helps establish that the role requires a degree in a specific field, not a general one.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Instructor roles
Filtering for visa-sponsoring universities can save weeks of research. Use Migrate Mate to browse verified Instructor openings at Texas State University and identify which roles are actively hiring international candidates across F-1 OPT, TN, and H-1B pathways.

Find Instructor at Texas State University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Texas State University sponsor H-1B visas for Instructors?
Yes, Texas State University sponsors H-1B visas for Instructor roles. As a public university and a qualifying nonprofit institution, Texas State may be eligible to file H-1B petitions outside the annual cap, which means sponsorship isn't limited to the April lottery window. Confirm cap-exempt status with the university's international office when you receive an offer, as eligibility can depend on the specific department and funding source.
How do I apply for Instructor jobs at Texas State University?
Applications for Instructor positions are submitted through the Texas State University HR portal, where you'll upload a cover letter, CV, teaching statement, and evidence of relevant qualifications. Some departments also request a teaching portfolio or course materials. You can also use Migrate Mate to browse currently open Instructor roles at Texas State that welcome international candidates before going directly to the university's application system.
Which visa types are commonly used for Instructor roles at Texas State University?
Texas State sponsors several visa categories for Instructor positions, including H-1B, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals, J-1 for visiting or exchange teaching appointments, and F-1 OPT and CPT for students completing degrees. For longer-term or tenure-track-adjacent instructional roles, the university may also initiate EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through the PERM labor certification process with the DOL.
What qualifications does Texas State University expect for Instructor positions?
Instructor roles typically require a master's degree or higher in the relevant subject area, though some positions, particularly in professional or technical fields, may accept equivalent industry experience. Teaching experience at the post-secondary level is a strong differentiator. For visa sponsorship purposes, your degree must clearly align with the subject matter you'll teach, which is a requirement USCIS evaluates closely for H-1B specialty occupation classification.
How do I handle the timing between my visa status and an Instructor offer?
If you're on F-1 OPT, you have up to 12 months of work authorization, with a potential 24-month STEM extension in qualifying fields. Starting conversations with Texas State's international services office as soon as you receive an offer gives the university time to file an H-1B petition before your OPT expires. For cap-exempt filings, USCIS can process petitions year-round, with premium processing available in roughly 15 business days if your start date is time-sensitive.
