Align your credentials with U.S. academic standards
Texas State evaluates foreign degrees carefully for faculty hires. Get your international transcripts evaluated by a NACES-approved credential service before applying, so hiring committees can confirm your qualification level matches the posted rank.
Target departments with active doctoral programs
Departments running active Ph.D. programs at Texas State hire more frequently and carry stronger institutional infrastructure for international faculty sponsorship. Research which colleges are expanding graduate enrollment to prioritize your applications.
Ask HR about PERM timing before signing
If permanent residency is your goal, ask during the offer stage whether Texas State will initiate PERM. DOL's PERM process takes 12 to 18 months before an I-140 can be filed, so starting early in your appointment matters significantly.
Build a dossier around teaching and research fit
Texas State faculty searches weight both research output and teaching load. Structure your application materials so your publication record and classroom experience are visible up front, which strengthens the specialty occupation case needed for H-1B sponsorship.
Browse open Professor roles through Migrate Mate
Professor openings at Texas State that include visa sponsorship are filterable by role and visa type on Migrate Mate, helping you confirm sponsorship eligibility before investing time in a full academic application package.

Find Professor at Texas State University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Texas State University sponsor H-1B visas for Professors?
Yes, Texas State University sponsors H-1B visas for Professor roles. As a public university, Texas State qualifies as a cap-exempt employer, meaning H-1B petitions for faculty can be filed at any time of year without waiting for the annual lottery. This is a significant advantage over private-sector employers and makes the H-1B a practical option for international faculty throughout the academic hiring cycle.
How do I apply for Professor jobs at Texas State University?
Professor positions at Texas State University are posted on the university's official careers portal, typically requiring a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching philosophy, research statement, and references. Applications are reviewed by departmental search committees. You can also browse Professor openings at Texas State that include visa sponsorship through Migrate Mate, which filters listings by role and sponsorship type to help you identify the right fit before applying.
Which visa types does Texas State University commonly use for Professor roles?
Texas State University commonly sponsors H-1B and J-1 visas for Professor roles, along with TN status for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying academic positions. For faculty pursuing permanent residency, the university can initiate EB-2 or EB-3 immigrant visa petitions through the DOL PERM process. F-1 OPT and CPT are also available for doctoral students transitioning into postdoctoral or adjunct teaching roles while completing their degree.
What qualifications are expected for Professor roles at Texas State University?
Most tenure-track Professor positions at Texas State require a terminal degree in the relevant field, typically a Ph.D. or equivalent, along with a record of peer-reviewed research and demonstrated teaching experience. Some professional disciplines accept equivalent practitioner credentials. For H-1B eligibility, the role must qualify as a specialty occupation under USCIS standards, which academic faculty positions almost always satisfy given the degree requirement attached to the posting.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Professor hired at Texas State?
For H-1B sponsorship, Texas State's international office typically needs six to eight weeks to prepare and file the petition, and USCIS standard processing takes three to five months. Cap-exempt status means timing is not tied to the October 1 fiscal year start, so appointments can begin as needed. J-1 sponsorship through the university moves faster, often within four to six weeks, but confirming two-year home residency obligations with USCIS before accepting is advisable.
