Tailor your CV to U.S. research standards
University lab roles in the U.S. expect a CV that highlights publications, grant involvement, and specific instrumentation skills. An Australian or international CV formatted for local conventions may undersell your research output to a hiring committee.
Target departments with active funded grants
Sponsored lab positions at universities depend on grant funding, not just headcount approvals. Search for University of Arizona departments with active NSF or NIH grants, since funded labs are far more likely to initiate a visa petition for a strong candidate.
Confirm your visa type early in interviews
University of Arizona sponsors multiple visa categories for lab roles, including H-1B, E-3, TN, and J-1. Ask the hiring department which pathway they intend to use before an offer is drafted, since each carries different timelines and work authorization start dates.
Understand the PERM labor market test timeline
If your role leads toward an EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card, the employer must complete a PERM labor market test through DOL before filing the immigrant petition. This process can take a year or more and typically starts only after you've established yourself in the role.
Find open Laboratory roles on Migrate Mate
Browsing general job boards makes it hard to filter for verified sponsorship-friendly employers. Use Migrate Mate to search Laboratory positions at University of Arizona directly, filtering by the visa types the university actively files for.
Check your OPT or CPT end date before applying
If you're on F-1 status, confirm your OPT expiration date before your first interview. University lab hiring timelines can stretch several months, and a misaligned authorization window can complicate or delay your start date if an H-1B petition isn't filed in time.

Find Laboratory at University of Arizona JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Arizona sponsor H-1B visas for Laboratorys?
Yes, University of Arizona sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying Laboratory positions. As a cap-exempt institution, the university can file H-1B petitions year-round without waiting for the annual April lottery. That means your start date isn't tied to the fiscal year cycle, which significantly reduces the timeline between offer and work authorization compared to private-sector employers.
How do I apply for Laboratory jobs at University of Arizona?
Applications go through the University of Arizona's official careers portal, where Laboratory positions are posted by department. Each listing specifies required qualifications, and you'll typically submit a CV, cover letter, and references. To find roles that actively support visa sponsorship, Migrate Mate lets you filter University of Arizona Laboratory openings by visa type before you apply.
Which visa types are commonly used for Laboratory roles at University of Arizona?
University of Arizona files for several visa categories depending on the role and your nationality. H-1B is the most common for specialty occupation lab positions. Australian citizens can use the E-3, which has no lottery. Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify for TN status. J-1 is used for postdoctoral and research exchange appointments, and F-1 OPT or CPT can bridge recent graduates into a role before a petition is filed.
What qualifications are expected for Laboratory positions at University of Arizona?
Requirements vary by role, but most laboratory positions require at minimum a bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific discipline. Research-focused roles often expect a master's or doctoral degree, along with hands-on experience with specific instruments or laboratory techniques. Postdoctoral positions require a completed PhD. For visa purposes, your degree must directly relate to the duties of the position to satisfy USCIS specialty occupation standards.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a University of Arizona lab role?
Timeline depends on which visa the university files for. E-3 and TN petitions can be resolved in weeks since they don't go through USCIS in the same way. H-1B petitions at cap-exempt universities are typically adjudicated within three to five months under regular processing. USCIS premium processing, which the university may offer for urgent hires, can reduce that to around fifteen business days.
