Verify Your Credentials Meet ECFMG Standards
UTMB requires ECFMG certification for international medical graduates before any visa petition moves forward. Confirm your medical degree has been verified and your USMLE steps are complete before you apply, since missing credentials stall offers.
Target Departments With Research or Teaching Roles
UTMB's academic medicine structure means many Medical Doctor openings sit within departments that blend clinical work with research or teaching, which strengthens an H-1B specialty occupation case and can align with cap-exempt institutional filing pathways.
Confirm UTMB's Cap-Exempt Filing Status Early
As a public research university, UTMB may qualify as a cap-exempt H-1B employer, letting you file outside the annual lottery window. Ask HR directly during the offer stage so your start date isn't dependent on an April selection cycle.
Request a Clear Timeline from the Hiring Department
UTMB's credentialing, privileging, and visa filing processes run on separate tracks. Ask the hiring team to map out each step at the offer stage so you know when USCIS filing, DEA registration, and state licensure need to be initiated in parallel.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Open Medical Doctor Roles
Searching broadly wastes time when UTMB posts openings across multiple hospital divisions and campuses. Use Migrate Mate to filter Medical Doctor positions at UTMB that are open to visa sponsorship, so you target the right roles from the start.
Prepare Your TN Documentation if You Are Canadian or Mexican
TN status is a fast, attorney-optional option for Canadian and Mexican physicians at UTMB. Prepare your employment offer letter specifying the Medical Doctor role and your medical degree credentials before crossing the port of entry, since CBP adjudicates TN at the border.

Find Medical Doctor at University of Texas Medical Branch JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Texas Medical Branch sponsor H-1B visas for Medical Doctors?
Yes, UTMB sponsors H-1B visas for Medical Doctor roles. As a public academic medical institution, UTMB may qualify as a cap-exempt employer, which means petitions can be filed at any time of year rather than competing in the annual lottery. Confirm cap-exempt eligibility with UTMB's HR or legal team during the offer process, since it significantly affects your start date planning.
How do I apply for Medical Doctor jobs at University of Texas Medical Branch?
Applications go through UTMB's careers portal, where roles are listed by department and campus. You can also find Medical Doctor openings at UTMB that are open to visa sponsorship by browsing Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for roles available to international candidates. Tailor your CV to academic medicine conventions and include ECFMG certification status if you're an international medical graduate.
Which visa types does UTMB commonly use for Medical Doctor roles?
H-1B is the most common visa for Medical Doctor positions at UTMB. TN status is available to Canadian and Mexican physicians. F-1 OPT and CPT can apply during residency or fellowship training if you're completing a UTMB-affiliated program. J-1 is also common in graduate medical education, though it carries a two-year home residency requirement that affects long-term plans.
What qualifications does UTMB expect for Medical Doctor positions?
UTMB expects an MD or DO degree from an accredited institution, active Texas Medical Board licensure or eligibility, and board certification or active pursuit of it in the relevant specialty. International medical graduates must hold valid ECFMG certification. Research or academic faculty roles may also require a publication record or prior academic appointment depending on the department.
How long does the hiring and visa sponsorship process take at UTMB?
From offer acceptance to start date, expect a minimum of three to six months when accounting for credentialing, privileging, and H-1B preparation and filing. If UTMB files as cap-exempt, USCIS premium processing can reduce adjudication to 15 business days. State licensure and DEA registration often run concurrently, but delays in any one track push the overall timeline out.
