Assistant Professor of Counseling and Psychology

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Wayland Baptist University is an intentionally Christian community of higher education that expects its employees to advance the mission, vision, and identity of the University as defined by policy and through the strategic plan. In their charge as educators and mentors to the university’s students, faculty should model an authentic Christian faith that is evident through their personal interactions, public activities, and commitment to a local church body. As a full-time faculty member, the Assistant Professor of Counseling and Psychology will be primarily responsible for teaching courses in Counseling and Psychology, as well as other courses aligning with the instructor’s professional and/or academic background.

SPECIFIC TASKS AND DUTIES:

• Prepare and teach (33) semester hours of primarily in-person or face-to-face classes each academic year as part of a 12-month contract.
• Understand and abide by FERPA regulations.
• Must be amenable to teaching within various modalities of instruction, including face-to-face, online, hybrid, and hyflex as necessary to meet contractual obligations.
• Maintain records of student expectations and performance for each class in the institution’s LMS (currently Blackboard Ultra), including at minimum:
• The syllabus posted by the start of the term
• Grades updated weekly
• Attendance updated after each in-person course session (f2f/hybrid/hyflex)
• Submit final grades in accordance with the processes and deadlines established by the University Registrar.
• Produce other student performance information as required or requested, including:
• last date of attendance for any Fs submitted as final grades
• Other grade and/or attendance checks
• Participate in data collection, including SLOs and fieldwork rubrics, coordinated by the School of Behavioral and Social Sciences.
• Abide by Accommodations sent by the Title IX and/or Disability Services Coordinators.
• Maintain office hours in accordance with university and campus policies.
• Be available online during the week (excludes vacation, holidays, and weekends).
• Dress professionally and appropriately for the tasks assigned.
• Assist the dean and faculty members in developing new courses/programs, reporting data, selecting textbooks, and developing syllabi.
• Serve on University, Faculty, and School Committees, assist with and attend graduations and school events, and attend scheduled faculty/staff meetings and professional development activities.
• Maintain competence in the use of Wayland’s adopted LMS and enrollment management systems, including the satisfactory completion of all necessary annual training. These systems include but may not be limited to:
• Blackboard Ultra
• Colleague
• VitalSource
• Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director and/or Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs.
• All work must be performed in alignment with the terms of the signed contract.

Additional Requirements:

• Endorsement by the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
• Able to pass background checks.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

• Hold an earned doctorate from a regionally accredited institution in an appropriate discipline.
• Hold and maintain licensure as a Professional Counselor (LPC) in Texas, or be eligible for Texas licensure. National Certified Counselor (NCC) credential is preferred.

Experience and Knowledge:

• Previous counseling experience is essential; previous teaching experience is desirable.
• Texas LPC Supervisor designation (LPC-S) is preferred.

Work Environment: The work environment for this position is a standard office setting. Employees will work primarily at a desk or workstation, utilizing standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and printers. Noise levels are generally moderate, with typical office sounds such as conversations and office machinery.

In addition, the position may require teaching in a university online classroom setting. This environment involves direct interaction with students, delivering lectures, facilitating discussions, and managing classroom dynamics to maintain an effective learning atmosphere for Hy-Flex courses. Classroom conditions may vary by discipline, but typically students will attend a classroom with a projector or whiteboard that shows the instructor and/or course content being presented. Noise levels can fluctuate depending on class size and activity, and the role requires adaptability to engage students and maintain order in a collaborative academic setting.

Hours of Work: WBUonline - The official work week for full-time salaried employees is forty (40) hours. External campuses - Although full-time, nonexempt external campus employees are normally scheduled to work 37.75 hours per week, the official work week for full-time salaried employees is forty (40) hours. Normal work days on all campuses are Monday through Friday.

Physical Demands:

• Frequently stand and walk;
• Frequently flex upper trunk forward while sitting or standing;
• Frequently lift up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds;
• Frequently carry up to 10 pounds and occasionally carry up to 25 pounds;
• Occasionally pull or push objects;
• Occasionally flex upper trunk forward at the waist and partially flex at the knees;
• Frequently reach at or below shoulder height, and occasionally reach above shoulder height.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Employment is subject to an introductory period to monitor employee performance. If hired, the prospective employee must present documentation within three (3) days of hire date to establish identity and employment eligibility as required by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Employee must be able and willing to travel and provide instructional or recruitment assistance to nearby external campuses. Must be able to operate a licensed motor vehicle, have access to a dependable motor vehicle, and possess a valid state driver’s license. Must have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record.
