Senior Level Controls Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a senior level controls engineer job?
Employers at this level look for engineers who have owned full project lifecycles, not just contributed to them. Demonstrating hands-on experience with industrial control systems, PLC or DCS programming, and system commissioning gives you a strong foundation. What sets candidates apart is the ability to lead technical decisions, mentor junior engineers, and communicate clearly with cross-functional stakeholders and project management.
Which companies hire senior level controls engineers?
Companies hiring senior level controls engineers right now include DLR, Fluor, and Johnson Controls, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Hiring at this level comes from a mix of large industrial manufacturers, engineering and automation consultancies, and capital-intensive operators in energy, utilities, and process industries.
Are there remote senior level controls engineer jobs?
Yes, though most roles still require on-site presence for commissioning and system integration work. About 17% of senior level controls engineer openings are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with remote opportunities more common in roles focused on engineering design, specification, and project oversight than in hands-on field work.
What makes a controls engineer role senior level?
Senior level controls engineer roles are defined by scope and accountability. Engineers at this level own system architecture decisions, lead integration efforts across multiple platforms or sites, and serve as the primary technical authority on projects. Mentoring less experienced engineers and collaborating with project managers, procurement, and operations teams is a standard expectation, not an occasional responsibility.
Which industries hire the most senior level controls engineers?
Senior Level controls engineer roles concentrate in Consulting & Professional Services, Construction & Real Estate, and Manufacturing, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. These sectors drive demand because they rely on complex, continuous, or safety-critical automated processes where experienced engineers are needed to design, validate, and maintain control systems at scale.
