Does an Account Based Marketing Specialist role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your school offers a marketing, business analytics, or related concentration that covers topics like customer segmentation, demand generation, or CRM strategy. Your DSO must confirm the role is an integral part of your curriculum, not just tangentially related. Roles focused primarily on paid media buying with no strategic or analytical component may face more scrutiny during DSO review.
Can I do CPT at a startup if they've never hired an F-1 student before?
Yes. CPT authorization is tied to your school's approval, not the employer's immigration history. The employer doesn't need prior experience with F-1 students. You'll need an offer letter and a confirmed start date. Your DSO handles the I-20 endorsement. Walk the employer through the process early so the offer letter includes your specific ABM duties.
What's the difference between part-time and full-time CPT for ABM roles?
Part-time CPT is 20 hours or fewer per week and doesn't affect your OPT eligibility. Full-time CPT is more than 20 hours and, if used for 12 or more months cumulative, eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Most ABM roles are structured as full-time internships, so track your cumulative CPT hours carefully if you plan to use OPT after graduation.
How do I find ABM Specialist roles where the employer understands CPT?
Migrate Mate filters for employers with documented F-1 work authorization filing history, which signals familiarity with CPT and OPT logistics. ABM roles at B2B SaaS companies and mid-size tech firms tend to have more structured internship pipelines with dedicated HR contacts who know how to onboard CPT students without delays.
Does my ABM CPT role need to be in the same city as my school?
Not necessarily, but remote and hybrid arrangements require your DSO's approval and must still satisfy the curricular integration requirement. If the role is fully remote, your DSO needs documentation confirming you'll remain enrolled and that the work connects to your degree program. Some schools restrict CPT to roles within a commutable distance, so check your school's specific CPT policy before accepting a remote offer.
