Does an Application Developer II role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if your degree program includes software development, computer science, or a related technical field and the role integrates directly with your curriculum. Your DSO evaluates the job description against your coursework to confirm fit. Roles involving application design, development, and testing typically satisfy this requirement for engineering and CS programs.
Can I do CPT as an Application Developer II at a startup?
You can, but startups introduce practical risks. CPT requires a formal employer-student agreement and, for STEM OPT transitions, E-Verify enrollment. Confirm the startup has a registered legal entity, can issue official offer letters on company letterhead, and is enrolled in E-Verify before committing, especially if you plan to use STEM OPT after graduation.
How do I find Application Developer II employers open to CPT?
Search on Migrate Mate, where listings are filtered for employers with F-1 work authorization history. Look for companies that have previously hired on F-1 status, since they're more familiar with CPT paperwork and DSO timelines. Mid-size tech companies and consulting firms tend to have established HR processes for work-authorized students.
What job duties are typical for CPT at the Application Developer II level?
Application Developer II roles generally involve designing and building software features, writing and reviewing code in languages like Java, Python, or C#, collaborating on system architecture, and conducting unit and integration testing. O*NET classifies this role under Software Developers, which maps well to computer science and software engineering degree requirements for CPT authorization.
Does full-time CPT as an Application Developer II affect my OPT?
Yes. Any single period of full-time CPT authorization counts toward the 12-month threshold that eliminates OPT eligibility. If you're completing multiple CPT semesters across a longer program, track cumulative full-time CPT hours carefully. Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, does not count against your OPT regardless of total duration.
