CPT Retail Jobs
Retail roles in merchandising, buyer training, and store operations can qualify for CPT when your DSO confirms the position is integral to your curriculum. Part-time CPT during the semester and full-time during breaks are both options, so timing your job search around your program's authorization windows matters.

Get Access To All JobsRetail CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
What retail job functions qualify for CPT authorization?
CPT covers retail roles that your school treats as an integral part of your curriculum, not just any job in a store. Positions like retail buying, merchandise planning, store operations management, and visual merchandising typically qualify for business or fashion degree students. General cashier or stock roles with no academic connection to your coursework are harder for a DSO to authorize.
Can I do CPT at a retail employer before I have a formal offer letter?
No. Your DSO authorizes CPT for a specific employer at a specific location. You need an offer letter naming the company, your role, your start date, and your expected hours before your school can update your I-20. Starting work before your updated I-20 is issued violates your F-1 status, regardless of how informal the arrangement feels.
Does full-time CPT in retail affect my OPT eligibility later?
Twelve months or more of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, even across multiple semesters, doesn't count toward that threshold. If you're planning to use OPT after graduation, track your full-time CPT hours carefully and discuss the cumulative total with your DSO before accepting a full-time retail position.
How do I find retail employers who are familiar with CPT hiring?
Browse retail listings on Migrate Mate, where you can identify employers with a track record of hiring international students. Retailers that run formal management trainee programs or have large campus recruiting operations tend to have HR teams that already understand CPT documentation, which makes the offer and onboarding process significantly smoother for you.
What should I do if a retail employer asks whether CPT requires them to file anything with USCIS?
CPT is school-authorized work authorization, not employer-sponsored. The employer doesn't file anything with USCIS and pays no government fees. Your DSO approves your CPT and updates your I-20, which is the only document the employer needs to verify your authorization alongside your EAD or I-20 during the I-9 process.
