Get Access To All JobsDirector Field Sales CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Director Field Sales role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your academic program includes coursework in sales management, business strategy, or marketing leadership that directly maps to the role's responsibilities. Your DSO evaluates whether the position is an integral part of your curriculum, not just related to your field of study. A director-level role requires a stronger curricular justification than an entry-level position, so prepare a clear written connection between the job duties and your coursework before meeting with your DSO.
Can I work full-time as a Director Field Sales on CPT?
Full-time CPT, defined as 20 or more hours per week, is permitted but requires careful planning. If you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT, you lose eligibility for OPT entirely. Most students in director-level capstone placements use full-time CPT for a single semester or structured program requirement to avoid exhausting their OPT eligibility before graduation.
How do I find Director Field Sales employers who understand CPT?
Use Migrate Mate to search Director Field Sales roles filtered for employers with a history of hiring international students. Many mid-size and enterprise companies in consumer goods, technology, and healthcare have established processes for CPT onboarding. Look specifically at employers with DOL Labor Condition Application filings in sales management occupations, which signals experience with work authorization paperwork at the director level.
What documents does my employer need to process my CPT placement?
Your employer needs a copy of your I-20 showing CPT authorization for the specific role and dates, plus confirmation of your F-1 status. Some employers also request a letter from your DSO explaining the academic basis for the CPT authorization. Director-level roles at larger companies may route your documentation through a legal or HR compliance team, so build at least two weeks of lead time into your start date planning.
Does CPT experience as a Director Field Sales count toward H-1B eligibility?
Yes. Work experience gained on CPT counts as qualifying professional experience for H-1B petitions. A director-level field sales role demonstrates leadership and specialized knowledge, which strengthens the specialty occupation argument your employer will need to make in an H-1B petition. Your CPT authorization period and job title will appear on your I-20, which USCIS accepts as documentation of lawful prior employment during adjudication.
