CPT Applications Developer Jobs
Applications Developer roles qualify for CPT when the work directly integrates with your degree program and your DSO has authorized the specific position. Software development, systems integration, and application lifecycle work all fall within the technical scope that makes CPT authorization straightforward for most computer science and engineering F-1 students.

Does an Applications Developer role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if the role is directly related to your major field of study and your school authorizes it as an integral part of your curriculum. For most computer science, software engineering, or information systems students, applications development work qualifies readily. Your DSO reviews the job description, not just the job title, so the offer letter needs to describe actual development tasks.
Can I do CPT at a startup that doesn't have a formal HR department?
Yes. CPT authorization is school-driven, not employer-driven. USCIS is not involved, and there's no government filing the employer must complete. The employer needs to provide a signed offer letter on company letterhead describing your role, start date, and hours. Many F-1 students complete CPT at small companies and startups without any issue.
How do I find Applications Developer jobs where employers already understand CPT?
Search on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers with a history of hiring F-1 students. Targeting companies that have hired CPT students before means less time explaining your work authorization, shorter HR review cycles, and fewer last-minute complications before your authorized start date.
What happens if my CPT job extends beyond my authorized end date?
Working beyond your CPT end date without a new DSO authorization violates your F-1 status. If your project extends longer than planned, return to your DSO before the current authorization expires and request an updated CPT authorization. Your employer can continue the role once the new end date is reflected in your I-20.
Can I work remotely for an employer in a different state on CPT?
Remote CPT work is generally permitted, but your DSO's policies vary by school. Some schools require the work location to be within a commutable distance; others authorize fully remote arrangements. Confirm your school's remote work policy with your DSO before accepting a remote offer, since the work location may need to appear on your CPT I-20 endorsement.
