Does a Civil Project Engineer role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if the position is directly tied to your civil or structural engineering coursework and your school's curriculum requires or offers academic credit for it. Roles involving site supervision, project scheduling, or infrastructure design typically satisfy the integral-to-curriculum requirement. Your DSO makes the final determination, so bring a detailed job description to your authorization meeting.
Can I do CPT on a construction site, or does it have to be an office role?
CPT covers field-based civil engineering work, including site inspection, materials testing, and on-site project coordination. The location doesn't determine eligibility. What matters is that the duties connect to your program of study and that your I-20 accurately reflects the employer and work location. Notify your DSO if your primary work site changes mid-authorization period.
How do I find Civil Project Engineer employers who are comfortable hiring CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate to identify civil engineering employers with a history of sponsoring work-authorized roles. Firms that have filed Labor Condition Applications with the DOL for H-1B visa positions already have internal processes for immigration paperwork, which makes them significantly easier to work with on CPT authorization logistics.
What happens to my CPT authorization if the project I'm assigned to gets delayed or cancelled?
If your role or start date changes materially, your employer needs to issue a revised offer letter and you'll need an updated I-20 from your DSO reflecting the new details. Working under a CPT authorization that no longer matches your actual position puts your F-1 status at risk. Contact your DSO as soon as you learn of any schedule or scope change.
Does full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility later?
Full-time CPT totaling 12 months or more eliminates your eligibility for OPT. Part-time CPT, regardless of total duration, does not affect OPT. If you're planning to use OPT after graduation, track your authorized hours carefully across all CPT terms and ask your DSO to confirm your running total before accepting a full-time civil engineering placement.
