Get Access To All JobsContract Administrator CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Contract Administrator role qualify for CPT authorization?
It depends on your degree program. If your curriculum includes coursework in procurement, contract law, supply chain, or business administration, a Contract Administrator role typically qualifies as an integral part of your education. Your DSO makes the final determination, so bring your course syllabus and a job description that maps duties directly to those classes.
Can I do CPT for a Contract Administrator role part-time while taking classes?
Yes. CPT can be part-time, which is common when you still have required courses to complete. Part-time CPT is defined as fewer than 20 hours per week and does not affect your OPT eligibility, regardless of how long you use it. Full-time CPT of 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, so track your cumulative CPT hours carefully with your DSO.
What documents does my employer need from me to complete the I-9 on CPT?
Your employer needs your current I-20 with the CPT authorization printed on page two, your valid passport, and your F-1 visa stamp. The I-20 serves as your employment authorization document for I-9 purposes during CPT. Make sure the CPT employer name, start date, and end date on the I-20 exactly match your offer letter before you present it.
Can I switch employers mid-CPT if a better Contract Administrator role comes up?
You can, but each CPT authorization is employer-specific and tied to your I-20. Switching requires your current CPT period to end, your DSO to issue a new I-20 authorizing the new employer, and the new employer to re-complete your I-9. There's no portability between CPT positions the way there is with OPT. Plan for a gap of several business days between authorizations.
How do I find Contract Administrator employers who understand CPT?
Search Migrate Mate for Contract Administrator roles filtered by F-1 work authorization. Employers who actively post on Migrate Mate are already familiar with CPT and OPT mechanics, which avoids the common problem of HR teams rescinding offers when they discover the CPT I-20 requirement. Your DSO's career office may also maintain a list of CPT-approved employers in procurement and contract management.
