Does a contract analyst internship qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the role is directly tied to your degree program and your DSO approves it. For business, supply chain, or legal studies students, contract analyst work typically aligns well because it applies coursework in contract law, procurement, or risk management. Your job offer letter should include specific duties that your DSO can match to your curriculum.
Can I do CPT as a contract analyst at a staffing agency or through a third-party placement?
This depends on your school's CPT policy. Many DSOs require the employer listed on your CPT authorization to be the entity where you physically work and receive direct supervision. If a staffing agency places you at a client site, your school may require the end client's information on the authorization, not the agency's. Confirm this distinction with your DSO before signing any placement agreement.
How do I find contract analyst employers who are familiar with CPT?
Migrate Mate lets you browse contract analyst roles filtered for employers with F-1 work authorization experience. Targeting employers who have hired CPT students before reduces friction during the authorization process, since they're already familiar with the DSO approval timeline and won't push back on your start date while paperwork is pending.
Will full-time CPT as a contract analyst affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes. If you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT, you lose eligibility for OPT entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, never affects OPT regardless of duration. If your contract analyst role could expand to full-time, track your authorized hours carefully and discuss the impact with your DSO before any schedule change takes effect.
What documentation should I prepare to request CPT authorization for a contract analyst role?
You'll typically need a signed offer letter or internship agreement that specifies your start date, end date, employer name, work location, and job duties. Many DSOs also require a written statement explaining how the contract analyst responsibilities connect to your current coursework. The OFLC Wage Search can help you identify the prevailing wage for your role and region if your program requires wage verification as part of the authorization process.
