Does an Enterprise Risk Management internship qualify for CPT?
Yes, if the role is integral to your degree program and your DSO approves it. ERM positions covering credit risk modeling, operational risk frameworks, or regulatory compliance typically map well to finance, business, or quantitative disciplines. You'll need a written offer letter and your school's authorization on your I-20 before your start date.
Can I do part-time CPT in an ERM role while finishing my degree?
Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, doesn't affect your OPT eligibility. Full-time CPT for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Many ERM internships run as part-time engagements during the academic year, which lets you preserve your full 12 months of OPT for after graduation.
What documents does my employer need to hire me on CPT?
Your employer needs your CPT-endorsed I-20 and your valid F-1 visa status. CPT authorization is employer-specific, meaning it's tied to the exact company and position listed on your I-20. Your employer doesn't file anything with USCIS for CPT, but they'll run you through their standard I-9 employment eligibility process using your documents.
How do I find ERM employers who are comfortable sponsoring F-1 students?
Search Enterprise Risk Management roles on Migrate Mate to identify employers with LCA filing histories for risk and compliance positions. Employers who have previously filed LCAs for similar roles already understand specialty occupation requirements and are more likely to have an established process for international students, which reduces friction during hiring and onboarding.
Does CPT in an ERM role help my H-1B sponsorship case later?
CPT itself doesn't directly strengthen an H-1B visa petition, but the experience it creates can. An ERM role on CPT builds the work history that supports a specialty occupation argument for future H-1B filing. If your employer files an LCA for an ERM position, that document also establishes a wage and job duty record you can reference when transitioning to H-1B sponsorship.
