Get Access To All JobsHospitalist Physician CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Hospitalist Physician role qualify for CPT as an F-1 student?
Yes, if your degree program explicitly includes supervised clinical rotations as a curriculum requirement. The hospitalist role must be listed or approved in your program of study, and your DSO must authorize CPT before your first shift. A position that is optional or purely for extra income won't qualify. Residency and clinical training programs almost always satisfy the integral-part requirement.
Can I work as a hospitalist on CPT without completing residency first?
Practical training in a hospitalist setting typically requires you to hold or be actively pursuing a U.S. medical license or be enrolled in a residency or clinical training program. Most hospitals won't credential you for independent inpatient coverage without an active license. CPT authorizes the work authorization side, but state medical board requirements and hospital privileging rules operate separately and still apply.
How do I find hospitalist employers who are familiar with CPT documentation?
Search Migrate Mate to identify health systems and hospitals with a track record of filing H-1B visa and LCA petitions for physician roles. Employers who regularly sponsor physicians are far more likely to have HR teams that understand CPT authorization letters, I-20 updates, and SEVIS compliance than facilities that rarely hire international trainees.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my hospitalist rotation is extended?
CPT authorization is tied to the specific dates on your I-20. If your rotation extends beyond the end date your DSO authorized, you must return to your DSO for a new or updated I-20 before the original end date passes. Working even one day past your authorized CPT period puts you out of status. Get the extension documented before it expires, not after.
Does full-time CPT in a hospitalist role affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes. USCIS counts 12 or more months of full-time CPT toward your OPT reduction. If you complete 12 or more months of full-time hospitalist CPT, you lose your entire OPT period. Part-time CPT, defined by USCIS as fewer than 20 hours per week, doesn't count against OPT. Discuss your CPT hours with your DSO before accepting a full-time hospitalist placement if you plan to use OPT later.
