Get Access To All JobsHR Business Partner CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an HR Business Partner role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if your degree program includes coursework in human resources, organizational behavior, labor relations, or business administration, and the HRBP role connects directly to those subjects. Your DSO makes the final call. Roles that are primarily administrative or clerical without a strategic HR component are harder to justify as integral to an HR or business curriculum.
Can I do part-time CPT as an HR Business Partner?
Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week by USCIS, is available without affecting your OPT eligibility. Many HRBP internships and co-op positions are structured at 20 to 24 hours per week specifically to accommodate student schedules. Full-time CPT for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility, so track cumulative authorization carefully with your DSO.
What documents does an employer need to onboard me on CPT?
Your employer needs your I-20 with the CPT authorization page showing the employer name, role, start date, and end date, plus your F-1 visa and passport. Some employers also request your I-94 arrival record and a letter from your DSO confirming enrollment. HR departments unfamiliar with CPT often ask for more than they legally need, so share the USCIS documentation requirements directly if questions come up.
How do I find HR Business Partner roles that accept CPT students?
Browse HR Business Partner listings on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers with sponsorship-aware hiring patterns. HRBP roles at mid-to-large companies with existing HR infrastructure are more likely to have the internal processes to onboard CPT students cleanly. Smaller companies without a dedicated HR function may not have handled CPT documentation before and can create delays.
Does CPT authorization restart if I switch HR Business Partner employers?
Yes. Each new employer requires a new CPT authorization from your DSO, with a new I-20 reflecting the updated employer name, work location, and dates. You can't transfer your existing CPT authorization to a new company. If you leave one HRBP role and accept another, allow at least one to two weeks for your DSO to process the new authorization before your start date.
