Reaching these goals requires city agencies to work together with residents, businesses, developers, advocates, funders, and each other. Planning and Development has a team of agencies that do just that. Our agencies include:

JOB DESCRIPTION
The Department of Planning and Development is looking for a Communications Intern for the Fall 2026 Semester. The Communications Intern’s duties may include Public Relations, Marketing, Branding and Advertising.
RELATED DUTIES MAY INCLUDE:

- Writing “how to” instructions
- Creating videos
- Editing
- Proofreading

The Communications Intern can expect to work up to 20 hours per week in-person.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Currently enrolled in Undergraduate level studies program in Marketing, Communications, Advertising, Journalism, Public Affairs, Public Relation.

What types of Communications jobs qualify for CPT authorization?
CPT-eligible Communications roles include public relations coordinator, corporate communications specialist, media relations associate, content strategist, internal communications analyst, and broadcast production assistant. Your DSO evaluates whether the specific job duties connect to your enrolled coursework, a PR role tied to a mass communications degree is a straightforward approval, while a loosely described 'communications support' role may require additional documentation from your academic department.
Does full-time CPT in Communications affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes. If you accumulate 12 months or more of full-time CPT, you lose your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, doesn't count toward that threshold regardless of duration. Many F-1 students in Communications deliberately structure internships as part-time or limit full-time CPT to fewer than 12 months to preserve their OPT for post-graduation employment.
Can I do CPT at a PR agency or media startup that hasn't sponsored visas before?
Yes. CPT doesn't require the employer to file any USCIS petition, authorization comes entirely from your school, not the employer. The employer only needs to provide an official offer letter describing your job title, start and end dates, hours per week, and compensation. Smaller agencies and startups that have never navigated H-1B visa or OPT sponsorship can still legally employ you on CPT without any additional immigration filings.
How do I find Communications employers open to CPT students?

Employers with established internship programs in PR, corporate communications, or media production are the most CPT-ready, they already have HR processes for I-20 amendments and employment verification. Reach out to your school's career services office for employer lists specifically pre-vetted for CPT placements in your program.
What happens if my Communications CPT job duties change mid-internship?
Any material change in job duties, hours, or work location requires a new CPT authorization from your DSO and an updated I-20 before the change takes effect. Working under a materially different role description than what your I-20 reflects is treated as unauthorized employment. Notify your DSO in writing as soon as a role change is discussed, not after it's already happened.
