Get Access To All JobsLearning And Development CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Learning and Development role qualify as a specialty occupation for future H-1B sponsorship?
Most L&D specialist and manager roles qualify as specialty occupations because they typically require a bachelor's degree in instructional design, education, organizational psychology, or a related field. USCIS evaluates the specific duties, not just the job title, so roles centered on curriculum design or competency frameworks are stronger candidates than generalist training coordinator positions.
Can I do CPT at an L&D consultancy or does it have to be an in-house team?
CPT is authorized based on the work's connection to your curriculum, not the employer's structure. An L&D consultancy qualifies as long as your duties align with your program and your DSO approves the specific placement. Consulting roles that rotate you across client projects can actually strengthen your DSO case by demonstrating applied learning across contexts.
How do I find L&D employers who are set up to hire F-1 students?
Search for L&D roles on Migrate Mate, which filters by employers with Labor Condition Application filing history. That filing record is a reliable signal that the employer understands work authorization requirements and has sponsored international employees before, which matters when you're planning your OPT and H-1B visa timeline.
What CPT documentation does an L&D employer typically need from me?
Employers need your CPT-endorsed I-20 showing the authorized start and end dates, your EAD is not required for CPT. Some L&D teams in regulated industries, particularly healthcare or financial services, may also request your SEVIS record number for their internal I-9 compliance files. Get the CPT I-20 from your DSO before your first day of work.
Does part-time CPT in an L&D role affect my full-time CPT eligibility later?
Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, does not count toward the 12-month full-time CPT limit that would eliminate your OPT eligibility. You can complete unlimited part-time CPT without affecting OPT. Full-time CPT in an L&D role counts against that 12-month threshold, so track your authorized hours carefully across all CPT positions.
