Get Access To All JobsOperations Intern CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Operations Intern role qualify for CPT authorization?
It depends on your program of study, not the job title alone. Operations intern duties involving process analysis, logistics coordination, or supply chain management typically align with business administration, industrial engineering, or operations management curricula. Your DSO makes the final determination by comparing your offer letter's listed responsibilities against your enrolled courses and program requirements.
Can I work as an Operations Intern before my DSO updates my I-20?
No. CPT authorization must be reflected on your I-20 before your first day of work. Working even one day without an authorized I-20 is a status violation under F-1 regulations, regardless of whether your employer has already onboarded you or your offer letter has been signed. Submit your CPT request to your DSO well in advance of your intended start date.
How do I find operations intern employers who regularly hire F-1 students on CPT?
Migrate Mate is built for exactly this search. You can browse operations intern postings filtered by employers with international student hiring history, which removes the guesswork of cold-applying to companies unfamiliar with CPT. Focusing on larger firms in logistics, consulting, or manufacturing also helps, since these sectors tend to have established onboarding processes for F-1 students.
Does full-time CPT as an Operations Intern affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes, and this is a rule many students miss. If you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT, defined as 20 or more hours per week, you lose your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT at under 20 hours per week does not affect OPT no matter how many months you accumulate. Confirm your weekly hours in writing before accepting any internship offer.
What documentation does an employer need to hire me as an Operations Intern on CPT?
The employer needs your CPT-authorized I-20 and a completed Form I-9, verified through E-Verify if the employer is enrolled. Unlike OPT, CPT does not require an EAD card, so your I-20 is the primary document. Some employers also request a letter from your DSO confirming the CPT dates and the specific role that was approved, so ask your DSO for one proactively.
