CPT Pharmacy Intern Jobs

Pharmacy Intern roles on CPT require your work to be directly tied to your pharmacy or pharmaceutical sciences curriculum, with DSO authorization before you start. Most placements run alongside a PharmD program's advanced pharmacy practice experience requirements, so your I-20 must reflect the internship before your first shift.

Pharmacy Intern CPT: Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Pharmacy Intern role qualify for CPT authorization?

Yes, if the internship is a required or integral part of your pharmacy curriculum. Most PharmD programs formally integrate Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience rotations into degree requirements, which meets the CPT standard. Your DSO will verify the academic connection before authorizing CPT on your I-20. Elective or optional internships may require a stronger curriculum justification.

Can I work at multiple pharmacy sites on the same CPT authorization?

No. CPT is employer-specific, meaning each site requires its own separate authorization on your I-20. If your rotation schedule places you at a hospital, a retail pharmacy, and a clinic in the same semester, you need a separate CPT entry for each location. Submit each request to your DSO before starting at that site, not after.

Does full-time CPT for a Pharmacy Internship affect my OPT eligibility?

Yes. If you accumulate 12 months or more of full-time CPT, you lose eligibility for OPT entirely. Part-time CPT, regardless of duration, doesn't affect OPT. Many PharmD programs structure rotations as full-time blocks, so track your cumulative full-time CPT hours carefully with your DSO before accepting a full-time placement.

How do I find pharmacy employers who are willing to sponsor F-1 students on CPT?

Search Migrate Mate to find pharmacy employers with documented work authorization filing history. Prioritize hospital systems, health networks, and pharmacy chains that have previously filed Labor Condition Applications or sponsored F-1 students, as they're familiar with the authorization process and less likely to withdraw an offer once they learn CPT is involved.

Do I need a state pharmacy intern license to work on CPT?

In most states, yes. State boards of pharmacy typically require you to hold a state-issued pharmacy intern license before you can perform any dispensing or patient-care activities. The requirements and application timelines vary by state, so check with your state board of pharmacy well before your CPT start date. Some states process applications in two to four weeks; others take longer.
