Get Access To All JobsSoftware Engineer Intern CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Software Engineer Intern role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if your school's curriculum includes a practical training component and the internship directly relates to your major, such as computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field. Your DSO makes the final determination. A job description with tasks like software development, debugging, or system design that map to your enrolled courses will support approval.
Can I do a remote Software Engineer Intern role on CPT?
Yes. CPT authorization is tied to your employer and job title, not a physical work location. Your I-20 endorsement will list the employer, and remote work counts as long as that employer is named. Notify your DSO if the work location or employer address changes, since some schools require an amended I-20 even for remote arrangements.
How do I find Software Engineer Intern employers who understand CPT?
Search Migrate Mate for Software Engineer Intern roles filtered for F-1 CPT students. Employers listed there are familiar with the DSO authorization process and won't require you to educate their HR team from scratch. Tech companies that hire international students regularly are far less likely to delay your start date over I-20 or onboarding questions.
Does CPT for a software internship affect my OPT eligibility?
Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, has no impact on OPT eligibility regardless of how long you use it. Full-time CPT used for 12 or more cumulative months eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. If you plan to use OPT after graduation for H-1B visa sponsorship purposes, tracking your full-time CPT hours is critical.
What documents do I need to start a Software Engineer Intern CPT job?
You need a valid I-20 with your DSO's CPT endorsement listing your employer and authorized dates, your EAD is not required for CPT, and you'll complete an I-9 using your passport, visa, and endorsed I-20. Your employer will also need your SEVIS ID. Confirm your I-20 end date aligns with your internship end date before your first day.
