Summer 2027 Intern - Chemist
Summary
Work alongside experienced chemists to learn the fundamentals of developing high-performance silicone formulations for aerospace applications through hands-on laboratory experience and mentorship. In collaboration with your mentor, you will define and execute a meaningful technical project that spans laboratory, pilot-scale, and production-scale activities, providing exposure to the full product development process.
Throughout the internship, you will apply scientific problem-solving skills, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and contribute to real-world aerospace technologies. At the conclusion of the internship, you will present your project objectives, findings, and key learnings to the Aerospace Technology team in Waterford.
Responsibilities Include:
- Prepare and evaluate silicone formulations for new product development, raw material qualifications, and product improvement initiatives supporting aerospace and electronics applications across laboratory, pilot-scale, and production environments.
- Learn and apply safe laboratory practices, formulation techniques, and operation of equipment used in silicone product development.
- Partner with a project mentor to design and execute formulation experiments, including the use of statistical tools such as Minitab or Design-Expert to support experimental design and data analysis.
- Procure materials, prepare formulations, conduct testing on uncured and cured silicone materials, and document experimental results.
- Analyze data, draw technical conclusions, and communicate findings through presentations and reports to the Aerospace Technology team.
- Maintain and improve the chemical inventory management system by auditing existing inventory records, verifying accuracy, and updating databases to ensure reliable material tracking and compliance.
Qualifications:
The following are required for the role
Minimum Qualifications:
- Successful completion of a BS degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science, Engineering or related field.
- Good laboratory skills for accurate weighing, pipetting, etc. chemicals in the laboratory and a general knowledge of safe laboratory practices for working with chemicals in a fume hood.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
Program Minimum Qualifications:
- The candidate must be actively enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at the time of application and for at least one semester following the conclusion of the internship.
- The candidate is expected to be available 40 hours a week for a period of 10-12 weeks between the months of May and August.
Education Requirement:
- Must be enrolled within a BS or MSc or PhD graduate program within Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science, Engineering or related field.
What We Offer:
Base Pay Range: $22.00 - $26.00
The base salary offered is determined by factors including but not limited to education, experience, skill sets, and geography.

Can I start a Summer Associate program before my CPT is authorized?
No. Working before your CPT start date on your I-20 is a status violation. Your DSO must issue an updated I-20 reflecting the authorized CPT period before your first day. If your start date shifts, your DSO must amend the I-20 accordingly. Never rely on a verbal confirmation from the firm.
What happens if my Summer Associate program extends past my CPT end date?
You'd need a new CPT authorization covering the extended period before continuing to work. Notify your DSO immediately if the program timeline changes. Working beyond your authorized CPT dates, even by one day, constitutes unauthorized employment and can affect your F-1 status and future immigration benefits.
How do I find Summer Associate roles that accept CPT students?
