Get Access To All JobsMarketing Intern CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Marketing Intern role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your school's curriculum includes a marketing, business, communications, or related program and the internship duties connect directly to that coursework. Your DSO evaluates the link between the job description and your academic program. Tasks like campaign analysis, content creation, and market research typically satisfy the curricular connection requirement, but your DSO makes the final determination based on your specific degree plan.
Can I do a part-time CPT marketing internship while taking classes full time?
Yes. Part-time CPT is defined as fewer than 20 hours per week and doesn't count toward the 12-month full-time CPT threshold that eliminates OPT eligibility. Many F-1 students complete part-time CPT alongside a full course load each semester. Your school may require you to enroll in a co-op or internship course to justify the authorization, so confirm the enrollment requirement with your DSO before you accept the offer.
What documents does the employer need from me to onboard a CPT student?
Your employer needs your current I-20 with the CPT authorization page, your F-1 visa stamp, and your passport for the I-9. The CPT authorization page on your I-20 serves as your work authorization document. There's no separate EAD card for CPT. Make sure the employer's I-9 verifier understands that CPT is employer-specific, meaning your authorization is tied to that exact job and cannot be used for a different employer simultaneously.
How do I find Marketing Intern jobs where the employer is familiar with CPT?
Migrate Mate lists Marketing Intern roles filtered by employers with documented international student hiring history, which reduces the time you spend educating recruiters about CPT logistics. Look for postings that explicitly mention work authorization support or international students, and prioritize companies with dedicated HR teams who handle I-9 compliance regularly, since they're less likely to rescind an offer over authorization confusion.
Does my marketing internship on CPT affect my future H-1B or OPT eligibility?
CPT itself doesn't affect H-1B visa eligibility, but full-time CPT totaling 12 or more months eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, which matters if you plan to use OPT before or during an H-1B transition. Part-time CPT has no impact on OPT. If your post-graduation plan involves STEM OPT or an H-1B cap-subject petition, stay under the 12-month full-time CPT limit and document each authorized period carefully with your DSO.
