ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
What We're Looking For:
- Actively pursuing an Associate, Bachelor, or Master's degree in Engineering, Architecture, Building Science, or related degree
- Interest in building forensics, mechanical systems, and structures
- Position requires carrying 40 – 70 lbs multiple times a day or occasionally lifting 85 lbs to waist height
- Must be able to provide suitable transportation for use on job sites - mileage will be reimbursed

Does a Consulting Intern role qualify as an integral part of my F-1 curriculum for CPT?
It qualifies if the internship is tied to a specific course, practicum, or required experiential component in your degree program. Consulting work in areas like strategy, operations, or data analysis commonly satisfies this requirement for business, management, and analytics students. Your DSO makes the final determination based on how your academic program defines integral curriculum experience.
Can I do a full-time consulting internship on CPT during the academic year?
You can, but full-time CPT during the academic year requires your school to certify that the internship is a required component of your program, not just an elective credit. Accumulating 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, so most students reserve full-time CPT for summer and use part-time CPT during active semesters.
How do I find consulting firms that understand CPT authorization requirements?
Search Migrate Mate to identify employers with a demonstrated history of hiring F-1 students in consulting intern roles. Firms already familiar with CPT know to complete Form I-9, understand the authorization timeline, and won't rescind offers when you explain that your start date depends on your DSO issuing an updated I-20.
What happens if my consulting internship scope changes after CPT is authorized?
CPT authorization is issued for a specific employer, position, and date range. If the role shifts substantially, such as moving from a project analyst function to a sales or administrative role, your DSO may need to reauthorize the CPT. Notify your international student office before the scope change takes effect to avoid a status violation.
Does the consulting firm need to file anything with USCIS for my CPT internship?
No employer filing with USCIS is required for CPT. The authorization is entirely school-based and processed through your DSO, who updates your I-20 to reflect the approved employment. The firm does need to complete Form I-9 for employment eligibility verification, and many university programs also require the employer to be enrolled in E-Verify as a condition of approving CPT.
