Get Access To All JobsData Science Intern CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a data science internship automatically qualify for CPT?
Not automatically. The role must be an integral part of your enrolled program, meaning your academic catalog, degree plan, or a specific course must require or credit the practical training. A data science intern position that maps to coursework in machine learning, statistics, or data engineering typically satisfies this, but your DSO makes the final call based on your specific program.
Can I do a remote data science internship on CPT?
Yes, remote CPT work is permitted, but the employer's physical address still determines which SEVIS record location applies and which DSO authorizes the placement. Your I-20 must reflect the correct employer details including their primary business address, even if you work from your campus apartment. Confirm this with your DSO before accepting a fully remote offer.
How do I find data science internships that are already familiar with CPT hiring?
Migrate Mate shows employers with verified work authorization filing history, which is a reliable proxy for companies whose HR teams have processed F-1 students before. Targeting those employers reduces the back-and-forth about what CPT requires and speeds up the offer-to-authorization timeline significantly.
Does full-time CPT for a data science internship affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes, if you use 12 or more months of full-time CPT before graduation, you lose eligibility for post-completion OPT entirely. Part-time CPT, regardless of total duration, doesn't affect OPT. Many F-1 students in data science programs use part-time CPT during the academic year and reserve full-time eligibility for a single summer internship to protect their OPT clock.
What should my CPT request letter include for a data science intern role?
Your letter needs the employer name, work location, exact start and end dates, and a clear explanation of how the specific tasks connect to your coursework. For data science positions, naming the tools and methods in the job description, such as Python, SQL, or statistical modeling, and tying them to specific courses or degree requirements makes approval faster. Vague descriptions like 'data analysis work' give your DSO less to work with.
