Can I work as an Engineering Intern on CPT before I've completed my first academic year?
No. USCIS requires F-1 students to complete one full academic year before becoming eligible for CPT. If you're a graduate student whose program requires an internship starting in the first semester, your school may have a narrow exception, but your DSO must confirm this in writing before you accept any engineering intern offer.
Does full-time CPT as an Engineering Intern affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes, it can. Twelve or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, regardless of total duration, doesn't affect OPT. If you plan to use OPT after graduation, track your full-time CPT hours carefully across all employers and semesters to stay under the twelve-month threshold.
How do I find Engineering Intern employers who have hired CPT students before?
Migrate Mate lets you filter engineering intern roles by employers with verified work authorization hiring history, so you're not guessing which companies understand CPT paperwork. Employers already familiar with CPT authorization move faster through the offer process, which matters because your DSO needs the offer letter before your start date.
What engineering disciplines are typically covered under CPT for intern roles?
CPT covers any engineering discipline as long as the internship ties directly to your enrolled degree program. Software, mechanical, electrical, civil, chemical, and industrial engineering internships all qualify, but the role's duties must map to your specific program's curriculum. Your DSO and academic advisor jointly determine whether the position satisfies the integral-part-of-curriculum requirement for your degree.
Can I switch engineering intern employers mid-semester while on CPT?
Not without new authorization. CPT is employer-specific, meaning your current authorization covers only the employer named on your I-20. If you change employers, your DSO must issue a new or amended I-20 before your new start date. Starting work with an unauthorized employer violates your F-1 status, so never switch without confirmed written authorization from your DSO first.
